Location of Oxford Brookes University

This one year, full-time programme prepares you to teach pupils in the 11 to 18 age-range. It enables you to understand how young people learn, both within and beyond your chosen specialist subject. It equips you to engage critically with the various ‘givens’ of professional practice, including guidance and policy at school, local and national levels, and to demonstrate the skills and commitment required to work with pupils from a broad range of backgrounds in state schools. The programme helps you to gain a sense of yourself as part of a community of practitioners, and to understand the importance of social learning. A number of opportunities to work at QCF Level 7 (master's level) are built into the programme and, upon successful completion, you could achieve 40 credits towards an MA in Education.

Contents

The course is divided into eight modules that ensure the development of your knowledge and skills across the year. The university-based parts of the course consist of two main strands: Contemporary Issues in Education and Subject Studies. These two elements are closely interwoven and are integrated with the school-based parts of the programme.

Contemporary Issues in Education is concerned with the values that underpin the educational endeavour, the nature of education and the most effective ways of achieving it. The course explores broader educational questions that will concern teachers regardless of their specialist subject, such as education for citizenship, pastoral responsibilities and the ethics of teaching. It will draw on the history of education as well as the most up to date research and developments in curriculum and policy. CIE draws on the disciplines of empirical enquiry, policy critique, learning theory and philosophy of education.

The Subject Studies strand builds on Contemporary Issues in Education and concentrates on subject-specific issues and pedagogies. You will study and apply the latest teaching methods within your subject.

School experience is a key element of the programme. You will spend 24 weeks in carefully selected partnership schools. You will be under the supervision of a mentor and supported by a university tutor, enabling you to integrate the understanding developed at university with school-based learning.
