Masters by Research (MRes) in Geo-Environmental Engineering
About a Masters by Research Degree (MRes):
An MRes combines 33% (60 credits) of taught classes and 67% project (worth 120 credits). On successful completion of the MRes research project it is possible for good quality researchers to transfer to the PhD Programme (i.e. the MRes would be equivalent to the first year of the PhD).
MRes in Geo-Environmental Engineering:
Geo-environmental engineering is a wide-ranging subject which combines geotechnics, microbiology, chemistry and hydrogeology among other things. Our MRes course is unique in Scotland and the UK for being taught by a group of professionally qualified civil engineers, chemists and microbiologists all employed full-time in the one university department. Our unique set of laboratory facilities provides hands-on experience which is essential for understanding the multi-disciplinary topics which constitute geo-environmental engineering.
Duration of Course:
12 months full-time or 36 months part-time.
The course is comprised of six taught modules with a major research project based on the MRes format. The wide range of taught modules including the following:
Core Modules:
* Contaminated Land
* Hydrogeology
* Research Protocols for Science and Engineering
* Site Investigation & Risk Assessment
Possible Options include, but are not limited to:
* Air Pollution Control
* Aquifer Mechanics
* Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
* Ecology, Biodiversity and Sustainability
* Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
* Fundamentals of Environmental Forensics
* Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
* Infection & Vector Control
* Practical Environmental Chemistry
* Waste Management and Landfil Design
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

In addition to academic qualifications, you must also be able to show that you have a sufficient grasp of English. If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your proficiency before you can begin the course, and you are strongly advised to take the IELTS or the TOEFL test examination. The University's general entry requirements are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 600 (including the Test of Written English), TOEFL 250 (computer based test) and TOEFL 100 (internet based test).
