The MSc in International Management was developed in response to the rapid growth of international business activity, which led to great demand in companies for high level expertise in international management and global leadership.

This growth of business on an international scale has highlighted both similarities and differences between people and nations, and their regulations and institutions. The MSc in International Management delivers the knowledge and skills required by international managers and leaders to operate globally as well as in a variety of national environments.

The MSc in International Management aims to provide students with broad knowledge and understanding of the practices and processes of international management. It also seeks to furnish graduates with the knowledge and skills required to operate across a range of business functions and organisational settings, both globally and in specific national environments.

With strong conceptual underpinnings, the programme is nevertheless practical in its orientation, emphasising the skills of working, managing and leading in various organisational settings.

Principal learning goals

  • To produce graduates who have the knowledge and skills to manage and lead in an international context across a range of core business functions and organisational settings, through the application of contemporary theory to professional practice
  • To develop global managers and leaders of the future who have a critical understanding of their role in creating and sustaining productive, high performing and innovative relationships which achieve enhanced levels of organisational performance in businesses which operate both globally and nationally
  • To facilitate the development of socially responsible managers who are sensitive to cross-cultural differences and their impact on management processes and practices
  • To enable graduates to make robust decisions through the effective management of knowledge and information drawn from the complex internal and external organisational environment, and to prepare them to contribute to strategic decision making
  • To produce graduates who have a critical and reflective understanding of themselves and others; who are able to demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility in working autonomously and collaboratively; who engage with personal and continuous professional development

Programme benefits

The MSc in International Management will develop students’ understanding of the national and global contexts in which international managers operate, and provide an appreciation of how those contexts have an impact on managerial expectations and preferences in different cultural environments. The programme will provide an understanding of how the national and global contexts – economic, socio-cultural and institutional – pose strategic opportunities and challenges to internationally-active managers from both large and small firms, and how those contexts impact on critical organisational functions such as marketing, human resource management and financial management.

The programme will also provide the following:

  • Lifelong learning skills: to recognise developmental needs as international managers and leaders, and identifying opportunities to tackle these
  • Research, analysis and problem-solving skills: to develop skills in the use of library and internet-based resources; to identify, analyse and critically evaluate the strategic choices and options facing international managers
  • Application skills: To apply models, tools and techniques of international management to different company, country and sectoral contexts; to integrate the knowledge from a range of international management subjects
  • Communication skills: to develop report writing skills; to structure and present complex data and ideas; to make effective presentations and to acquire skills in argument and debate
  • Team-working skills: To appreciate the benefits and challenges of working within teams; to apply theory to practice in operating within multicultural teams; to experience problem-solving within multicultural teams; to improve time management and workload planning capacities

Contents

The MSc in International Management consists of three core International Management modules (Global Business Environment, Managing Across Cultures, Strategy and Organisation Across Borders), four function-orientated modules (International Human Resource Management, International Marketing, Introduction to International Finance and Management, International Entrepreneurship), two electives, and a practically-orientated end-of-programme project. These modules are complemented by International Manager Development Programme.

Combined, these modules provide students with broad knowledge and understanding of the practices and processes of international management, and skills required to operate globally across a range of business functions and organisational settings.

Resources

Textbooks

Textbooks are supplied to programme participants for all core modules, with the exception of Developing a Business Plan and Doing Business Abroad, for which there is no appropriate text.

Library resources

The Andersonian Library has an extensive collection of books which have been acquired specifically for the programme. Programme participants will also have access to the resources of the Business Information Service (BIS). This service is exclusively available to students of the Department of Management and is an invaluable resource for the production of business plans, report and other assignments.

Study skills and careers advice

A number of classes will be held on Study Skills, run by the Centre for Academic Practice. The sessions deal with skills relating to the writing of reports, essays and case studies; preparing for examinations; and writing development. In addition the Careers Advisory Service will hold sessions for students on CV preparation, job search and interviewing techniques.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

The Masters in International Management (MIM) is primarily designed for those with a business-related degree or those with international trade or international business work experience. Both recent graduates and experienced managers are welcome to apply. Exceptionally, some qualified and highly motivated students without formal international business training may be admitted, subject to pre-sessional study of appropriate subjects. Applications from those who can demonstrate that their work experience merits direct entry to the programme will also be considered.

Completed application forms are considered as they are received, and you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible. The Admissions Committee will consider all the information submitted and will decide whether to offer you a place on the course. The Admissions Committee meets on a regular basis and, providing you have supplied all the necessary information, you should receive a decision within two to three weeks of application.

Applicants should complete the online application form and upload the following supporting documentation:

  • Detailed CV
  • Evidence of academic qualifications (degree certificate and full academic transcripts. A certified translated version of these documents must be provided if these documents are not in English.)
  • For those applicants whose first language is not English, evidence of English proficiency is required. A minimum of 6.5 in IELTS (with equal weighting across all bands), 600 TOEFL or 95 iBT is required.
  • Two references will be required to support your application. These can either be uploaded to your application file or, if you prefer, we will contact your referees if you provide their email addresses in the online application form.

Accreditation

There are three international accrediting bodies for business schools. These are :

  • AACSB International - the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, based in the USA
  • EQUIS - the quality assurance scheme run by the European Foundation for Management Development (efmd) and based in Brussels
  • AMBA - the Association of MBAs, based in the UK

To achieve accreditation by one of these bodies is an achievement in itself. To achieve accreditation by all three bodies is a truly outstanding accomplishment and one to be proud of.
