Masters Programmes are now a well-established career entry route for undergraduates in Business and Management who wish to further develop their knowledge and skills. Also, students from other subject areas who want or need business knowledge as an adjunct to specialist knowledge in their fields will find these courses attractive.
The School offers new postgraduate courses in Management and International Business starting in September 2008. These courses take advantage of the latest developments in organisations and research to offer critical insights into the theory and practice of modern management and international business. They offer opportunities for students to assess real organisations and use work placements in these organisations both in the UK and the Netherlands as a basis for their dissertation research.
The MA in Management and MA in International Business aim to extend management skills preparing you for the world of work at the highest level. Modern managers need to take into account the fast pace nature of change and internationalisation in the world of business. The MA Management and MA International Business offer a robust grounding in distinct aspects of management and global business.
Alongside lectures and seminars we have developed a study abroad trip, in conjunction with our MBA partner institution in the Netherlands, that brings an exciting chance to explore your personal and team building skills in a European setting and undertake a consultancy study of an international enterprise. There is also an opportunity for some domestic and international internships where you will learn `on the job´ in real life businesses.
The qualifications these programmes will bring will give you an edge in the job market either enabling you to compete more effectively with traditional graduates with a first degree, or enabling you to enter management at a higher level than you would have been able to with only a first degree. For those interested in pursuing academic research these programmes are an invaluable stepping stone to a doctorate or other research degree.
Both MA programmes last for 12 months. During the first semester (September to January) students will take the following four core modules:
* Critical Management Studies
* Global Business Analysis
* Accounting and Finance
* Marketing and Operations Management
In the second semester (January to May) students take the following modules:
MA in International Business
* International Finance Reporting
* International Business Developments
* Management Creativity and Personal Development
Students must choose two of the following options (subject to availability):
* Entrepreneurship
* Branding
* Strategic Human Resource Management
* Commerce & Information Technology
The Project Phase of the programmes will include a dissertation or an internship. Each taught module is worth 15 credits and the dissertation or internship is worth 60 credits. To obtain the MA qualification students will need to obtain 180 credits in total.
Internship (60 credits) Dissertation/Internship (60 credits)
From May to September students are required to write a research-based dissertation in an area of choice on an approved topic related to the pathway they have chosen, or write a report based on an in-company internship. Aspiring applicants for the internship must meet the required selection criteria demanded by both School and facilitating organisation.
The internship will be available for Masters students during the period June-September. The student will be able to apply to take on a real commercially relevant, University agreed project, for a local organisation. This is a remarkable opportunity to learn to manage a discreet project from start to finish or to work as part of a wider group on larger strategically important projects.
