Location of University of Bath

The aim of the course is to provide experience in a wide range of laboratory techniques and enhance specialist knowledge in chemistry. Research projects may be chosen from any area of computational, physical, inorganic or organic chemistry. Course components include an advanced chemistry practical unit, two research projects, taught units in advanced chemistry, modules in transferable skills. It is a self-contained qualification, and graduates will be well-suited for posts in all sectors of the chemical industry, including the pharmaceutical industry and government institutions. It may also form the first year of a four year integrated PhD programme.

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath is a centre of excellence in a wide range of chemical research areas. In support of this excellence, the University has recently invested £9 million in a new research building and £3 million for a teaching building.

Research in the Department spans all sub-disciplines, from theoretical physical chemistry to biological and synthetic chemistry and antibody engineering. Major themes that are represented include electrochemistry, polymer chemistry, studies of Langmuir-Blodgett films, organometallic, and main group chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, catalysis and computational chemistry.

In addition to purpose-built laboratories, the department boasts a range of research facilities. These include X-ray crystallography (including two CCD X-ray diffractometers), X-ray powder diffraction, high field NMR (250 and 300, 400 and 500 MHz) with hands-on facility, mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, automatic peptide synthesis, FTIR and a very wide range of molecular modelling facilities which are available across the Department.

Requirements

2.1 or higher first degree (or equivalent) in the physical sciences. Students may also enter the programme of study with a taught Masters degree in an appropriate subject. The minimum non-graduate qualifications acceptable for admission to the University of Bath are:

* Membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status or a relevant professional qualification acceptable to the Board of Studies.
* Extended and responsible experience at an appropriate standard in a relevant field acceptable to the Board of Studies.

* IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components) or
* TOEFL (internet) 92 overall, 21 Writing, Listening 21, Reading 22, Speaking 23
