This programme has been specifically designed for graduates who wish to develop their skills as microbiologists or virologists. The programme aims to result in a significant level of theoretical and practical understanding, which will be important for those wishing to follow a career in clinical sciences or academic and industrial research.
The MSc Medical Microbiology programme has its roots in a prestigious qualification developed early in the 1920's by Professor WCC Topley. As such, it can be considered to be the oldest taught postgraduate microbiology qualification in the country, and probably in the world! In more recent times the MSc in Medical Microbiology programme has become well established consolidating our microbiology teaching. The MSc and Diploma in Medical Microbiology are intensive full-time or part-time postgraduate taught programmes encompassing the medical and molecular aspects of bacteriology, virology, mycology and immunity to infection. The Manchester microbiology programmes are unique, because our students spend much of their time actually in the laboratory, learning how to be microbiologists.
Course aims The aim of the programme is to provide students with an understanding of the scientific basis of traditional and novel microbiological concepts, in either bacteriology or virology. In addition, you will develop knowledge, specialist practical skills and critical awareness needed to enable graduates to pursue a career in microbiology/virology. Special features The programme has a significant component of practical based teaching and this ensures students obtain maximum exposure to practical and theoretical aspects of a wide range of clinically relevant pathogens. The practical skills gained are valued by students and by potential employers.
Module details The programmes consist of 120 Credits of taught material and followed by a 60 Credit research project (MSc only). There are core and optional taught modules as follows: Core Modules
* Health Sciences and Research Methods (30 Credits)
* Understanding Infection (30 Credits)
* Global Health and Epidemiology (15 Credits)
* Molecular Diagnostics (15 Credits)
Optional Modules (any two to be taken)
* Clinical Microbiology 1 (15 Credits)
* Clinical Microbiology 2 (15 Credits)
* Clinical Virology 1 (15 Credits)
* Clinical Virology 2 (15 Credits)
Candidates on the MSc Medical Microbiology select modules in Clinical Microbiology 1 and 2, or a mixture of Clinical Microbiology and Clinical Virology units. Students wishing to have a more virology-focused curriculum should enroll on the MSc Medical Virology and will take Clinical Virology 1 and 2.
All MSc students carry out a three-month research project after the taught components have been successfully completed.
Course content for year 1 Full-time (FT) students take the above modules and research project in Year 1. Part-time (PT) students can undertake the MSc over 2 years.
