For 2011 entry there will be no year 1 intake for this course. Year 1 applicants are advised to apply to the Psychiatry (blended learning) MSc. A small number of places will be available in 2011 for people who join in the second year and meet the APL (accreditation for prior learning) requirements.
This programme is for trainees in psychiatry who wish to develop basic knowledge and skills in psychiatric research and have an interest in pursuing a career in academic psychiatry. The taught component of this programme is composed of the MRCPsych units for Papers 2 and 3 units plus MSc/Diploma-specific units. Students on the MSc also undertake a piece of supervised research leading to a dissertation.
Teaching is provided by a range of professionals in the field of mental health, including clinical academics and NHS consultants. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used, including lectures, interactive seminars, case presentations and private study.

* acquire knowledge and skills sufficient to pass the Paper 2 and 3 examinations for Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
* gain knowledge of, and skills in, research in psychiatry, together with knowledge and interest in a broad range of psychiatry or mental health areas

Applicants must be medically qualified and employed in a basic psychiatry training rotation. Paper 1 of the Royal College Membership exam, should be passed before progressing to year 2 of the MSc.
Satisfactory references are required, one of which must be from the Royal College site tutor. On this basis, applications from students based overseas are not usually considered eligible to apply for this programme. All applicants will be approved via interview with the Programme Director.
English language: Students whose first language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 575 paper based or 230 computer based.
