The overall purpose of the programme is to produce professionally competent, reflective and analytical social work practitioners who are able to practice in a variety of settings, with a range of service users, in accordance with National Occupational Standards and expectations identified in the Code of Practice for social care workers. The programme is designed for postgraduates who wish to become registered social work practitioners and provides the flexibility for you to choose a special area of interest in the second year (children and families, adults and community care or mental health).

Please note: The UK government is currently reviewing the nature and content of all social work qualifying courses and therefore some of the course content and structure may be subject to change.

Special features Practice learning

200 days of practice learning within partner agencies are an integral part of the course and take place over both years. Our partner agencies range from large statutory authorities to smaller private and voluntary agencies. This breadth ensures that students gain a variety of experiences that mirror the diverse roles and responsibilities in the arena of social care.

Placements

Placements may occur in traditional settings and also with Asylum and Immigration, Housing Associations, Employment Services and within Day Centre Services. All students on placement enjoy regular supervision from a practice educator. They are also allocated a Practice Link Tutor who represents the university and is responsible for the student's learning on placement and for providing support to the agency.

ECDL

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent is a compulsory component of this programme.

The GSCC requires all providers of Social Work education to ensure that everyone graduating from their programmes is computer literate. On the University of Manchester programme, the way in which this requirement is satisfied is by requiring all students to successful complete the ECDL. The programme offers resources and support to students to pass required ECDL modules in order to graduate and register as practitioners with the GSCC. Students who can demonstrate equivalent competence in IT will not be required to undertake the ECDL.

Under current arrangements, those students who need to attain the ECDL learn the skills via online learning materials and will have to pay for their own tests. There are seven modules, and arrangements are in place for students to take the tests within the university at a cost of £12.00 for each attempt at the test for each module (i.e. a minimum cost of £84).

Course content for year 1 The first year includes learning about social policy and social divisions, law and ethical conduct, the life course, communication skills and the needs of different service user groups.

Students also undertake 100 days of practice placements during this year.

Course content for year 2 In the second year students learn about research methods, theories of social work intervention, working across organisational boundaries, and will choose a particular area of interest for in-depth learning.

For those students without the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), or equivalent, this must be completed by the end of this year.

There is also a further 100 days of practice placements in this year.
