By the end of the programme, you should be able to read and understand the leading economics journals, develop economic models of your own from which to derive original results and offer a critique of underlying theories.
Teaching and learning The learning outcomes of the MSc in Economics are that students should be able to:
. acquire a systematic knowledge and understanding of current and prospective developments in the theory and practice of economics
. acquire an advanced knowledge and understanding of the core theoretical models of economics and econometrics, and an awareness of associated empirical evidence
. acquire knowledge and understanding of basic research skills in economics, including analytical, behavioural and comparative aspects
. acquire a knowledge and understanding of advanced techniques and skills applied in theoretical and empirical research
. acquire a systematic and advanced knowledge and understanding of selected specialised fields of economics, including a familiarity with the latest research developments and issues; an understanding of the limits of such knowledge and the effects of this on analyses and interpretation
. acquire knowledge and experience in the development of a research enquiry and to select the tools necessary for executing the research; the skills to pursue independent learning, to analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data and to present results in a form that is appropriate
. acquire a critical awareness of research issues, methodologies, and methods in economics, combined with a knowledge of corresponding skills in planning and managing a research project, carrying out a piece of original research
. produce an original piece of academic research in the form of a dissertation, demonstrating a critical knowledge of the associated research literature and an awareness of the implications and of the limitations of the research findings.
Teaching is via lectures mainly and supplementary tutorials/examples classes. Each module typically involves between 20 & 25 hours contact time.
Module details
There are typically five compulsory course units: Microeconomic Theory; Macroeconomic Theory; either Mathematical Methods in Economic Analysis or Mathematical Economics; either Introduction to Econometrics and Further Econometrics or Time Series Analysis and Intermediate Cross Section Econometrics or Advanced Econometric Theory and Topics in Advanced Econometrics.
In addition, students take three approved optional course units from a wide range. Students sponsored by the ESRC are requested to take Research Design for Economists plus two optional units.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Academic entry qualification overview:
UK 2:1 (or overseas equivalent) in economics/econometrics or a related subject for direct MSc entry.
In addition to the normal supporting documents, applicants for the MSc in Economics must also supply the following:
- A brief description of the course units taken on their undergraduate degree, detailing core texts used. This does not have to be an official document. A paragraph for each course unit taken will be sufficient.

MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS PREPARATION FOR THE MSc
In preparation for the technical aspects of the course, we recommend the following:
1. Please visit our pre-session maths website where you will find information about the minimum level of knowledge of mathematics and statistics that you should possess from your current or previous training.
2. On the same website, please look at the details and content of our Pre-Session course on mathematics and statistics which builds on the knowledge resumed in (1) and which is designed to equip you with further tecnhical skills that you will require before starting the MSc. You are encouraged to attend this intensive 5 day course which is offered, free of charge, and which will run from 14-18 September 2009. We recommend that you spend some time between now and September 2009 studying and familiarising yourself with the course material on the website, especially if you might not be able to attend the course.
English language:
Applicants whose first language is not English must attain one of the following:
IELTS - Overall 7, writing score 7
TOEFL - Overall 623, TWE 5 (PBT)
TOEFL - Overall 263, TWE 5 (CBT). This test is no longer available but results less than 2 years old can be submitted.
TOEFL - Overall 100, with 25 in each of the 4 sections (IBT)
Applicants with scores below our requirements may be eligible to attend one of our pre-sessional English courses. Duration will be confirmed when an official result has been received.
Exemption to the requirements is at the discretion of the School. Applicants who have been taught and assessed in English on previous degrees may still be required to show proof of English proficiency via TOEFL/IELTS.
TOEFL Certificates - please designate the University of Manchester as a recipient of your result. The code is 0757. Results must come directly from ETS (TOEFL).
