The Democracy and Elections pathway will appeal to students interested in aspects of formal and informal politics, party and non-party engagement, the elected and electors and in the relationship between the process of government and the normative foundations of democracy.
The Research Route is a methods oriented pathway that offers a higher level of methodology training than the Standard Route. It is suitable as a pre-PhD year but also may provide valuable post MA level job skills in data analysis and methodological approaches.
Those applicants wanting a four year (1+3) programme for their PhD should apply to the Research Route using this MA application route.

Module detailsResearch Route MA (Democracy and Elections) students will study Political Parties in Contemporary Britain and Democracy: Theory and Practice, Advanced Research in Politics, Dissertation Research Design, Qualitative Methods and Quantitative Training. Additionally students choose modules from a battery of options from MA taught courses such as:
* Comparative Citizen Politics
* Rational Politics
* Rhetoric in Public Policy
* Understanding Governance
* The European Union: Politics and Policy Making
* Feminism and Political Theory
* Justice and Pluralism
This degree is aimed at those wishing to study the nature of democracy and the behaviour of citizens and states. It provides both quantitative and qualitative training and each student carries out a research dissertation based on an aspect of democracy, elections, governance or behaviour. Examples of dissertation topic areas include:
* Trust, turnout and participation.
* Deliberation in democracy.
* Electoral behaviour.
* Modern political parties.
* Engagement and representation of citizen groups.
* Democratic institutions.
* Normative and practical aspects of democracy.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Academic entry qualification:
For the MA, an Upper Second class honours degree in a cognate subject, or the overseas equivalent.
English language requirements:
Applicants whose first language is not English must attain one of the following:
* IELTS - Overall 7, writing score 7
* TOEFL - Overall 623, TWE 5 (PBT)
* TOEFL - Overall 263, TWE 5 (CBT). This test is no longer available but results less than 2 years old can be submitted.
* TOEFL - Overall 100, with 25 in each of the 4 sections (IBT)
