Course content

In the first semester, all students are normally offered a basic 'hands-on' training in ethnographic documentary-making as well as taking modules on the history of ethnographic film and theoretical issues in visual anthropology.

In the second semester, those on the Ethnographic Documentary pathway engage in further film-training, whilst those on the Visual Culture pathway consider a broader range of topics in media anthropology, including photography and sound recordings. Both pathways involve further practical project work and more theoretical modules in this semester.

Over the summer vacation, all students carry out a practical field project. In principle, students on both pathways can go anywhere in the world to carry out these 'final projects', provided they present a well thought-out proposal.

Some former film students have been to the most distant corners of the globe (New Zealand, Thailand, Malawi, the Andes), whilst others have chosen to make their films a few hundred yards from the University (amongst the homeless, in a local beauty parlour, or on music in multi-cultural education).

During both semesters, students on both pathways normally take ONE 30-credit module involving practical hands-on projects and TWO 15-credit lecture- or seminar-based modules on more theoretical, methodological or substantive ethnographic topics. The latter are each assessed by means of a 4000-word essay.

The practical modules are assessed by various combinations of a portfolio of project work and an accompanying written text. For assessment of the 'final projects' carried out over the summer vacation, students on the Ethnographic Documentary pathway are required to produce a 30-minute film with an accompanying companion text of 2500-5000 words, whilst the those on the Visual Culture pathway are required to produce a dissertation of 8-12,000 words accompanied by other media such as a short film, a photographic essay and/or some other form of audiovisual production.
