Most students are registered in the first instance for the degree of MPhil. Students are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis. The transfer from MPhil to PhD is subject to students passing an assessment process, which normally involves submission of written work and an oral examination.
The final stage of the PhD degree is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.
Qualifications and durations
* Full-time MPhil 1-3 years
* Full-time PhD 2-4 years
* Part-time MPhil 2-4 years
* Part-time PhD 3-6 years
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath is a centre of excellence in a wide range of chemical research areas. In support of this excellence, the University has recently invested £9 million in a new research building and £3 million for a teaching building.
Research in the Department spans all sub-disciplines, from theoretical physical chemistry to biological and synthetic chemistry and antibody engineering. Major themes that are represented include electrochemistry, polymer chemistry, studies of Langmuir-Blodgett films, organometallic, and main group chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, catalysis and computational chemistry.
In addition to purpose-built laboratories, the department boasts a range of research facilities. These include X-ray crystallography (including two CCD X-ray diffractometers), X-ray powder diffraction, high field NMR (250 and 300, 400 and 500 MHz) with hands-on facility, mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, automatic peptide synthesis, FTIR and a very wide range of molecular modelling facilities which are available across the Department.
