Location of University of Bath, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences

90 credits are required for the MA, 60 credits (including credit for the unit Research Methods in Education) for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and 30 credits for the Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Studies. For the MA, 60 credits come from taught units and 30 from a 15,000 word dissertation. Typically, students complete five 12 credit taught units. The Research Methods in Education unit (12 credits) is compulsory for all MA Programmes. For the MA in Education, students must also study the unit 'Understanding Learner and Learning' and/or 'Education and Society'.

Students can specialise within a particular area, or study a general degree. Units are available in various modes of study, including attendance at the University at timetabled semester-time sessions, our July Summer School, and at local and overseas study centres, distance learning, and directed tutorial mode.

Contents

Typically, students complete five 12 credit taught units plus one 30 credit dissertation. It is possible to do a general MA in Education, or to specialise in a particular named award. There are different study pathways within the programme, with a range of units of study. Each pathway has a number of compulsory and optional units, more details of which can be read on the study pathways page. When you begin your studies with us, we ask you to indicate which units you plan to study.

There are various ways of studying for your degree and you can study full time or part-time. It is also possible to study towards the International Baccalaureate Teacher Awards 1 and 2 as part of your MA in Education at the University of Bath.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

A first degree or equivalent from a recognised university. Relevant professional experience is desirable but not essential. The minimum non-graduate qualifications acceptable for admission on to the MA in Education; candidates should normally possess either (a) an advanced diploma in education and at least two years of relevant experience; or (b) a teaching qualification (gained after at least the equivalent of two satisfactory years of higher education) and at least two years of relevant experience; or (c) be graduates of an approved university, or holders of a degree awarded by the CNAA (or of certain other approved graduate equivalent qualifications) and at least two years of relevant experience.

English requirements

IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components), OR TOEFL (paper based test) no less than 580, OR Cambridge Proficiency English (CPE) Grade C, OR Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) Grade B.

England-based qualified teachers are eligible for support from the Training and Development Agency.
