Increases in chronic diseases and obesity are placing an enormous strain on resources. This masters programme is designed to address this issue – not just to 'patch up' the problem, but to help change social perceptions and action policy in addition to addressing the underlying theme of prevention. The pervading theme is exercise, its physiology and prescription in various social settings and health contexts. The course enables students to develop an informed, reflective and critically analytical approach to the rapidly changing area of exercise for health.
What will you study?
Suitable for any professional with an interest in exercise, the course incorporates social marketing and policy issues in a multidisciplinary and holistic fashion. There is a strong emphasis on exercise physiology and psychology.
By its nature the Exercise for Health MSc is a forerunner in its field, bridging the gap between sports science elite and the general population in a holistic fashion. It will equip you with the tools to become proactive in change and actively part of a healthy future.
The course is a collaboration between the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences and the Faculty of Science so you benefit from the teaching expertise and facilities of both. The team is well placed to lead this innovative programme, with a range and depth of experience in exercise, sport and health disciplines as well as research.
Most of the sessions will be classroom based with the exception of several laboratory sessions exploring field skills when measuring and dealing with fatigue. This is therefore not a sports studies oriented course or curriculum.
