The course aims to: develop an understanding of the key issues pertaining to the leadership, management and improvement of schools and educational systems; provide relevant and current theories for examining these issues from a range of perspectives; enable colleagues at all levels within an organisation to diagnose and problem solve key issues related to school improvement. Course aims The course aims to:
* Develop participants' understanding of the key leadership issues that influence teachers' performance in primary and secondary schools and other educational settings.
* Provide an overview of relevant and current theories/frameworks for examining these issues from a leadership perspective.
* Enable colleagues at all levels within educational institutions to identify issues and develop appropriate strategies to generate and sustain school improvement.
* Develop knowledge and understanding of practical approaches to School Improvement and School Effectiveness and of current theories, issues and debates in the field.
* Develop a range of learning and transferable skills which integrate current research and best practice in the areas of School Leadership and School Improvement applicable to different students on different programmes.
Special features This course is taught by leading academics in the fields of leadership, management, school effectiveness and improvement. Tutors include Professors Gunter, Muijs and West and Doctor Chapman. Shaun Best leads the research methods element of the programme. Other senior educational experts also contribute to the degree, these include Headteachers, inspectors, local authority (school district) officers and policy makers. Module details Typical course units include: Leadership and Management of Schools as Organisations; Leadership and Management of People in Schools; Research Methods in Educational Leadership and School Improvement; School Improvement; School Effectiveness; Educational Change and Gender and Education.
