The conservation of the Earth's remaining biodiversity is one of the most important challenges facing humanity. However, there are no easy solutions because biodiversity conservation has to operate in complex socio-economic, political, cultural and institutional environments.
Successful conservation practitioners must span academic disciplines and combine advanced social skills with intellectual rigour. They also need to work effectively in both a conventional office environment and some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. Our one-year UK Research Council-recognised MSc course develops knowledge and critical understanding of conservation and biodiversity science and practice, and the socio-economic, political, cultural and institutional environments within which policy and management decisions are made.
Candidates will gain state-of-the-art knowledge of biodiversity, conservation and management in a real world context. They will develop their research, analytical, and communication skills. They will address conservation as a dynamic discipline that is integral to all the major areas of human concern such as judicial reform, political economy, spatial planning, poverty alleviation, human and institutional capacity, agriculture, and population growth, as well as biodiversity issues.
The course is led by key members of the Oxford University Centre for the Environment (OUCE) (which incorporates the School of Geography, the Environmental Change Institute and the Transport Studies Unit) and is directed by Prof. K.J. Willis, Prof. R.J. Whittaker and is managed by Dr R.J. Ladle. The MSc is a truly interdisciplinary course that benefits from inputs by conservation professionals and biodiversity experts from around the world.
The one year, full-time course is based on a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, field courses and student lead research projects. The OUCE has a commitment to personal development and academic freedom and encourages students to pursue their own research interests and attend seminars and lectures throughout the University.
The MSc course comprises:
* Nine core modules which are assessed by written examination;
* Two electives, which are assessed through essays and/or coursework;
* An original and independent research dissertation;
* Training in research methods;
* Workshops, study tours and field trips; and,
* Biodiversity Research Group seminars.
The formal element of the programme is composed of 8 core modules, 2 optional modules and a 15,000-word summer research dissertation. The dissertation is considered a central part of the MSc as it provides the opportunity for participants to apply knowledge gained in class to the area of expertise they wish to develop.
Dissertation topics will be left to the discretion of the candidate, but it is anticipated that established research activities of core staff will inspire work in some of the most celebrated, biodiverse and controversial locations around the world.
