This Distance Learning Course is aimed at students who come into contact with individuals with severe or profound learning disabilities or other complex needs, and those who have a desire to gain specialized knowledge in this area. A theoretical framework is reinforced through consideration of practice related issues.

The course aims to promote strategies that enable individuals with learning disabilities to share the same rights, opportunities and choices as other people. This is achieved by studying a range of subjects including:

* Methods of communication (including alternative and augmentative systems);
* Effects of sensory loss and dysfunction;
* Management of challenging behaviour;
* Values and attitudes towards disability;
* Issues in education from infancy through to adulthood, including Lifetime Learning;
* Family issues;
* Effective advocacy and
* Multi-disciplinary working.

Participants on this course come from a range of professional backgrounds and include Care Workers and Managers, Social Workers, Teachers, Nurses, Foster Carers, Speech and Language Therapists and Psychologists. There is an opportunity to meet other students at a yearly study school.

Special features The course is distance learning and equivalent to 180 credits at M (postgraduate) level of study, including a 60 credit dissertation. Students are allocated a personal tutor to guide them through their period of study and are supported through a telephone/email tutorial system and via a dedicated internet site. There are no formal examinations.

An October Study School forms an integral part of the course where students attend a residential study school in Manchester.

The aim of the Study School is to introduce students to the concept of a person-centred approach to support and development. The accent is on moving towards increasing choice, developing relationships, improving competence, developing community presence and participation, and increasing respect for the individual. This approach underpins all aspects of course delivery.

Students studying the MSc full time attend two 4 day study schools over consequtive weekends (8 days in total). Overseas students studying part time may also opt to attend both Study Schools in their first year. An optional two day study school on research issues is available to students during their dissertation study period.

Course content for year 1 Students study compulsory course units Towards Inclusion, Communication Issues and Behaviour. The number of optional units taken will depend on the route of study - full or part time and the number of years of study.

Details of the compulsory units are as follows:

Towards Inclusion

The Towards Inclusion course unit traces the development of 20 th Century theories, policies and approaches to learning disability and critically evaluates their impact upon the lives of people with profound and complex learning difficulties. Students then consider contemporary approaches such as person centred planning, supported employment and inclusive education and examine the role of such approaches in fostering and promoting inclusion.

Communication Issues

Communication is the fundamental skill of human interaction. The course looks at the development of the cognitive processes that underpin this ability, and the manner in which that development changes- from pre-intentional communication to intentional and symbolic interaction. The course units also examine the physical equipment involved in transmitting verbal and non-verbal communicative information. Use of equipment that has been recently developed to assist and augment the range of communicative behaviours is also considered.

Behaviour

This course unit discusses what is meant by `behaviour' and how behaviour `challenges'. These ideas are further explored within the context of profound and complex learning disability, and others' reactions to episodes of challenging behaviour. The unit presents a range of methods and ideas, for understanding and responding to an individual's behaviour in a constructive way.

Course content for year 2 3 year part time students study the compulsory unit Research for Practioners (30 credits) and two further 15 credit optional units.

Details of the Research for Practioners unit:

This course unit promotes the awareness of wide ranging research issues required to be an effective user and practitioner of research. It underpins the decision on a dissertation topic, and provides discussion of research ethics and methodologies in preparation for implementation of dissertation research.

Students on the 2 year part time and 1 year full time course study the Research for Practioners unit in Year 1.

Course content for year 3 3 year part time students complete their dissertation (60 credits) in Year 3.

Details of the Dissertation:

The dissertation is the culmination of a Master's student's study. Within the dissertation period the student demonstrates their skills in self-directed study, research design, implementation and analysis, as well as critical discussion of study findings in relation to the wider literature.

Students on the 2 year part time course complete their dissertation in Year 2. Students on the 1 year full time course complete their dissertation in Year 1.
