Every year, the University admits around twenty graduate students to study for the M.Sc. and M.Phil. in economic and social history. The students come from all over the world, with backgrounds in a large variety of subjects, ranging from science, engineering and economics, through the social sciences, history, and the humanities. The disciplinary background is less important than a high level of achievement and motivation. Students are often able to bring their prior specialisations to bear on their chosen research topics. They also share the experience of an intense introduction to the range of current approaches in the social sciences, and of their application to history.
These specialist master's programmes offer a unique framework for research training in economic and social history. The compulsory core qualifying papers provide an opportunity to evaluate a range of different approaches, and also for the students to influence and respond to each other. They impart a common language, and create a close and friendly community, in which ideas are shared, and strong personal ties are forged. The course community provides a base from which to venture out and experience the other rewards of Oxford, intellectual, social, and cultural.
The M.Phil. is a two-year programme and the M.Sc. a one-year programme. They offer a wide range of options and allow students to specialize in economic and/or social history, or historical demography, although the boundaries between these areas are deliberately permeable.

From the taught graduate courses, it is possible to proceed to doctoral research and the degree of D.Phil.
This programme provides the standard induction into the field of economic and social history. Tutorials and classes for this degree programme take three terms of residence (one academic year). During the first two terms candidates must pass a qualifying test and then a final examination consisting of two papers taken in June, and a dissertation of not more than 15,000 words submitted in September.

* applicants for master´s degrees will be expected to have attained BA Hons equivalent before starting the programme (outside the UK, this normally entails at least four years of full-time study)
* applicants for doctoral degrees will be expected to have completed a postgraduate master´s course or the equivalent before starting the programme (in European terms: M2 level)
* applicants whose native language is not English must submit language test results
* IELTS: an overall score of 7.5, with at least 7.0 in each component.
* TOEFL: an overall score of 630 with a Test of Written English score of 5. - Applicants who have taken the computer-based TOEFL test must achieve an overall score of 267 with an essay-writing score of 5. -
* Applicants who have taken the new Internet-based TOEFL test must achieve an overall score of 109
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Grade B.
