Telecommunication technology is a key enabler for today´s information society. The rapidly increasing demand for speed and capacity, which more than doubles every two years, makes it a field with strong dynamics, rapid aging of existing technologies and frequent introduction of new technologies in the network. Telecommunication technology is one of the broadest specializations; it integrates knowledge from the fields of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technology Management. The TU/e is an internationally recognized center of excellence in the field of Broadband Telecommunication Technologies.
The Master´s degree program in Broadband Telecommunication Technologies is broadly based, including compulsory courses in electromagnetism, physics, mathematics, digital network technology and performance analysis. Wireless and optical communication systems and networks and RF electronic and photonic devices also form part of the program. You can choose your elective courses from a list of more than thirty subjects. These include photonic ICs, network operation, computational electromagnetics, adaptive signal processing, ultra-fast optical switching and coding theory.
The program also contains courses on professional development and two internships. Your studies are completed by a research project.
This is a special Master´s degree program which formally forms part of the Master´s degree program Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. This special Master´s degree program will become an independent program in the future.
The special Master's degree program Broadband Telecommunication Technologies lasts two years. Each year consists of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).
These credit points are subdivided as follows:
First year
- Physics and mathematical courses (10%)
- Broadband Telecommunication Technology courses (40%)
- Internship (15%)
- Development activities (15%)
- Electives (20%)
Second year
- Electives (10%)
- Internship (25%)
- Final research project (65%)
Internship opportunities
The Master´s degree program includes two internships of six and ten weeks. One of these should preferably be in another country, if you have not yet gained international experience. But if you have already done so, then you can follow both internships within the university. The university can help you to find internship placements at companies or universities in Europe or beyond, for example in the USA or Japan.
SpecializationsThe special Master´s degree program in Broadband Telecommunication Technologies has a choice of five profiles: Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and Technology Management. The contents of this Master´s degree program will depend on the profile of the department in which you follow the program. Within the Electrical Engineering profile, you follow a broadly based program with a certain level of specialization at the end of the program and in the final research project.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country. Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test. More information
The general requirements for admission to the TU/e Master's of Science programs are:
- A relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the TU/e Master's program in question.
- Sufficient mastery of the English language. To prove sufficient command of the English language you should submit an Academic IELTS or TOEFL test.
- Experience shows that students with BSc Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Bachelor's study of at least 75% are more likely to be admitted to a TU/e Master´s program.
- There may also be specific additional requirements for some Master's programs, depending on the nature of your prior education.
- Non-EEA students who are admitted to a TU/e Master's program, but who do not receive a recognised scholarship or a student grant from the Dutch government, are required to transfer a sum of 10,000 euro to the TU/e.
