This MSc aims to produce high quality graduates with specialist training in fluid dynamics who will be suitable for employment in the aerospace, mechanical, chemical, offshore and water engineering industries. You do a mixture of topics in theoretical, computational, and experimental fluid mechanics.
Career opportunities The programmes will prepare students for a broad range of careers in the financial sector requiring high quantitative and mathematical skills. The programme would also provide an excellent background for students wishing to pursue advanced postgraduate research in this area.
Module details Typical core course units include: basic fluid dynamicss, perturbation methods in fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics I and II. Optional course units usually include: coastal hydrodynamics, hydrodynamic stability theory, introduction to combustion theory and linear and nonlinear waves. You take two optional course-units, but not all the options may be offered every year. You also take non-examinable course units in FORTRAN 77/90, UNIX, C++, Matlab, Mathematica, LaTex, Word, technical report writing and oral presentation. Progression and assessment After the taught part of the programme, MSc students work on a research project under the supervision of a member of staff, submitting a dissertation in September. Some industrial research projects are also available. You then have an industrial supervisor in addition to an academic supervisor for your research project. A dedicated postgraduate computing cluster, in addition to extensive experimental facilities are available.
