Climate change is now commonly recognised as the single most pressing issue facing society on a global basis. Society is increasingly being asked to consider the effects of its personal and professional activities on the environment, while across a variety of sectors, businesses are embracing the need for lower environmental impact and greater sustainability in their operations. Multinational corporations such as HSBC and Tesco are committing to climate change action with large investments and wide ranging environmental commitments in their business models.
These responses to climate change concern are generating demand for a new breed of professionals that will be able solve the problems climate change will present for society and the environment. Public and private sector employers will need graduates with the knowledge of how to mitigate against climate change through emissions reductions, and an understanding of how organisations and society must adapt to the impacts of climate change, such as changing weather patterns, increased flooding, forest fires and rising sea level.
Brunel University's Climate Change Impacts and Sustainability MSc is run by our Institute for the Environment, and will draw on expertise across Brunel University to provide postgraduate students with an advanced and multi-disciplinary understanding of both the nature of recent climate change and its likely impacts on human society and the environment.
We aim to provide students with an interdisciplinary knowledge of the potential impacts of global warming and climate change across a variety of key areas, including public health, business and economics, national and international policy and technological development, underpinned by a critical understanding of the concept of sustainability as applied to resource and energy use. In so doing, we aim to meet the changing needs of society by generating graduates able to tackle the challenges presented by climate change, thus preparing them for careers that will likely span the transition to a post-carbon economy.

Global warming is a pressing and universal environmental issue, which is likely to affect essentially all arenas of human activity. This will create demand for professionals with the knowledge and understanding of how to mitigate our impact on the atmosphere and how to adapt to climate change. These professionals will be needed in a wide variety of organisations in public, private and charitable sectors; in energy, transport, mining, heavy and light industrial, service and retailing, financial, marketing and insurance.
A recent one-day conference on global climate change organised by The Guardian featured presentations from central government (MPs, the Mayor of London, UK Govts chief scientific advisor) and local government (Merton Borough Council), NGOs (WWF, FoE), and from Shell, Boots, HSBC, Barclays, Cooperative Group, Berkely Homes, National Express Group, BAA, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Vodafone and BskyB. These are among the myriad of target employers for graduates of the proposed program.
