Location of NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences

This postgraduate course is run as a partnership between six universities specialised in tourism and offers a unique opportunity to develop expertise in tourism management in a European context. You will be studying in at least two European countries, with students from all over the world. You will not only experience the way of life and the educational systems of two countries, but you will also learn to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

In short: a perfect preparation for a management position in private companies or public bodies involved in tourism throughout Europe.

This Master programme is accredited in the UK and leads to an official Master of Arts degree (MA).

The following European educational institutes participate in this MA Programme:

* Bournemouth University in the UK
* Högskolan Dalarnay, Falun/Borlänge in Sweden
* Fachhochschule Heilbronn in Germany
* NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences
* Université de Savoie, Chambéry in France
* Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid in Spain

The course aims at providing theoretical knowledge in the field of tourism as well as applied techniques of international management. The course seeks to produce potential managers for both private companies and public bodies involved in tourism throughout Europe. The necessary insight and understanding of the existing cultural differences between countries and their implications is fostered by letting students work together in international project teams.

This objective will be met by developing the following skills and competences:

* knowledge and understanding of, and ability to work with the administrative, financial and policy frameworks and structures of the European Union and other relevant international organisations involved in tourism;
* ability to appraise and respond in strategic and tactical terms to issues facing managers in tourism;
* ability to deal with specific tourism related issues;
* aptitude for working in a multi-lingual, international team;
* the ability to demonstrate clear analytical, synthetic and strategic skills in at least two European languages.

Contents

The course is divided into three stages:

simultaneously in 3 different countries:

Sept.-Dec.Stage 1 Theoretical Courses Breda/Borlänge/Bournemouth

Feb.-May Stage 2 Theoretical Courses + Application of theory in a case studyMadrid/Chambéry/Heilbronn

June-Sept.Stage 3 Writing a dissertation All centersStage 1

Stage 1 is simultaneously taught at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands), Högskolan Dalarna (Sweden) and Bournemouth University (UK). The course usually starts mid-September. According to the philosophy of the course, students are not allowed to attend the programme in their own country. All lectures during this stage will be conducted in English, irrespective of the location.

After a one-week introduction period, a number of management-oriented subjects are taught until December:

* Tourism principles and practice
* Business strategies
* Policies, planning and development in European tourism
* Foreign languages

Stage 1 is a period during which the students will increase their understanding of European Tourism and of the range of techniques available to them as managers, paying particular attention to the influences which might constrain or enhance their actions.

The main concern here is to map out the general features to the role and working environment of those involved in managing tourism in a European context and also to develop the relevant social and technical competencies. Course work is explicitly designed to enhance understanding and awareness, while at the same time developing a variety of skills and habits. Activities will include data feedback, investigation work, and role play.

Supportive resource materials continue to be developed for this programme. Wherever possible and appropriate, visiting lecturers will also be involved, drawn from industry, policy-making bodies and those actively engaged in research and consultancy.

The mixture of different nationalities within the staff and student grouping provides a rich resource and facilitates the simulation of the kind of international environment within which we expect our output to work. The course work is specifically designed to draw upon the students as a valuable resource, their varied experiences, national and cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

In addition to the taught components students are expected to start preparations for the MA thesis.

At the end of January, a mini-conference will be held in Chambéry, France, titled "Researching Tourism", where ETM students will present their initial ideas about their dissertations in terms of aim of the dissertation, research objectives and methodology. Besides this, several guest-lectures will be presented on Research Methods and Techniques for the purpose of guiding and assisting the students in their dissertations.

Stage 2 The second part of the programme, running from February till May, will take place in Heilbronn for approximately one third of the students; the remaining students will be distributed amongst the other centres (Chambery and Madrid). The same principle will be applied: students are not allowed to attend the programme in their own country. As a result the composition of the student groups in stage 2 is likely to differ from the composition in stage 1.

If you choose to go to Heilbronn, lectures are taught in German. If you choose to go to Chambéry or Madrid, lectures are taught in French or Spanish respectively.

During this stage you will focus on:

* Marketing for Hospitality and Tourism
* Managing Organisations
* Research Methods
* European Tourism Consultancy Project - a major life case study for a tourism organisation

The focus moves from a central concern with the general features of management functions in the tourism environment to the implementation of strategies and policies facing three main types of tourism organisations: direct providers; intermediaries; strategic bodies at national and local levels.

In order to provide a logical development from stage 1 the objective is to place the students in a realistic managerial situation to allow them to apply and synthesise the techniques, skills and competencies already acquired.

The `live´ case study is developed from `commissions´ secured from the industry in its widest sense, which has the dual value of increasing reality, but also supplying help and backing to support the research and other work involved.

The subject areas for the case studies will be deliberately chosen to meet several criteria, which include:

* taking advantage of the outstanding local tourism specialisms;
* drawing on the professional expertise of the industrial partner;
* enabling students to gain as wide an experience as possible.

Students will normally be working in a language other than their own and many of the activities will be group-based as an integrating case study will be adopted as a mechanism for the delivery of this taught course.

Stage 3From May until September students are expected to carry out a research and to write their dissertations independently. This final stage of the course will be one during which students demonstrate in-depth understanding of an issue concerning tourism management in Europe. The student should show his or her ability to collect relevant data, to subject the data to appropriate analysis and synthesis and to prepare the final dissertation, which normally has to be submitted in a foreign language by the 1st of September in the calendar year following their initial registration. There is no restriction on where you live during stage three but you will need to have access to the library and other facilities of one of the ETM education centres, and to make arrangements to consult staff about your dissertation.

Assessment The successful completion of stages 1 and 2 is rewarded with 120 credits. A satisfactory dissertation leads to another 60 credits. Please note these are credits according to the British education system. 2 British credits correspond to 1 ECTS.

The courses adopt a mixed mode of delivery incorporating lectures, seminars and workshops. The exact nature of the assessed course work varies and includes both individual and group assessment.

All assessment exercises are designed to adequately represent each individual´s level of understanding of the topic as well as their technical and presentational skills and competencies. All subject units in stage 1 and 2 are equally weighed.

In order to proceed to the third stage of the course, students must have passed with a mark of 50% or above all units of stage 1 and 2. In case students fail the dissertation they have the option to resubmit once or they can choose to be awarded for the Postgraduate Diploma in European Tourism Management.
