The Oxford MSc in Financial Economics (MFE) is a full-time nine-month programme that provides outstanding training in the tools of financial economics sought by financial institutions, companies and public organisations. It combines a rigorous academic core with tailored practical application, designed in consultation with leading financial recruiters. Our students are placed within top investment banks, financial consultancies, and government finance ministries. There is also a research track for those interested in pursuing doctoral research in financial economics.
The MFE is run jointly by the Saïd Business School´s finance faculty and the University´s Department of Economics. The finance faculty at the Business School is one of the fastest growing and most prestigious in Europe, and works alongside the most diverse and well-known groups of economists in the world. Together they publish prolifically in top journals, speak at academic and practitioner conferences, and advise companies, financial institutions and governments.
The MFE has been designed in close consultation with a panel of advisers from leading financial institutions. This panel has helped ensure that the choice and content of courses match the needs of employers. The panel continues to play an important role on the MFE, providing up-to-date practitioner advice on course content, supplying adjunct faculty and representing major recruiters.
The Saïd Business School has a dedicated careers service which will provide you with opportunities to gain the specialist skills and knowledge you require to compete for jobs at the highest levels within the world of professional finance.
During the academic year, the careers service provides a wide range of activities to assist students with their career planning and skills acquisition. These include workshops, addressing areas such as CV writing, interview preparation, networking and presentation skills, and opportunities to meet with recruiters, through panel discussions and on-campus presentations.
Contents
Through courses in corporate finance, asset pricing, microeconomics and econometrics you will gain a thorough grounding in the study of financial economics. In addition to the core courses you will be able to develop your own specialist knowledge and map out a future career through your choice of elective courses.
Courses are all structured to look at both the theoretical underpinnings of a subject and their practical application. In the Oxford MSc in Financial Economics we have created a course fundamentally concerned with a detailed examination of the foundations of business, taught in a manner which imparts long-lived and valuable knowledge.
Core courses:
All students take the core courses in corporate finance, asset pricing, financial econometrics and economics. These core courses are all carefully integrated: the economics and econometrics courses apply theories and methodologies to finance, and the finance courses provide the underlying economic principles of financial practice.
- Asset Pricing
The asset pricing course covers the theory and practice of valuing claims to uncertain cash flows; for example, stocks and stock options, bonds and foreign-exchange instruments. The course covers standard material such as CAPM and the Black-Scholes formula, and some advanced material such as consumption-CAPM and pricing formulas for "exotic options". About half of the course is dedicated to the application of advanced statistical methods to the area of asset pricing and to practical work with real-world data.
- Corporate Finance
Corporate finance studies the financing, valuation and corporate governance of firms. During this course, you will learn the fundamental principles of financial accounting, the valuation of firms' assets and the determinants of firms' financial structures. You will be taught the key components of firms' financial decisions and the operation of financial markets, including new issues of securities, debt and dividend policy. You will learn about the relevance of different financial institutions to the financing of firms, the takeover process, corporate restructurings and financial distress.
- Financial Econometrics
The course in financial econometrics provides students with a background in the fundamentals of empirical modelling and testing in finance. This will allow you to better understand crucial concepts like risk, evidence and prediction.
- Economics
Microeconomics is the study of how financial and commercial frameworks and conditions impact on individual situations and business units. During this course you will learn to apply the basic tools of market and firm analysis, game theory, incentive theory and auctions. In addition, the course will provide an introduction to fundamental ideas in macroeconomics, reinforced by lectures from leading policy experts.
The wide range of electives available enables you to gain a deeper knowledge of areas of special interest. You will be expected to complete five elective courses.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

1. Good undergraduate degree
As guidance, a 2.1 degree (GPA 3.5 or its equivalent).
2. GMAT or GRE score
As guidance, we expect the average scores to be around the 90th percentile on the quantitative tests and around the 80th percentile for the verbal tests. Regarding the GRE analytical writing test, we would expect most candidates to achieve a score of at least 5. Information on the GMAT and GRE is available from www.gmac.com and www.gre.org respectively.
The institution code for ordering your official GRE score sheet from ETS is 0807. There is no department code, this can be left blank. The code for ordering your official GMAT score sheet from Pearson is Q0G-4B-54.
GRE and GMAT scores will not be valid if they are more than five years old on the application deadline for the stage in which you are applying.
3. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Test Scheme (IELTS)
You do not need to take the TOEFL or IELTS test if you have either:
- Studied full time at degree level for a continuous period of 3 years in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA or UK.
- Recently lived and worked for a continuous period of 3 years in any of the previously stated countries.
If your circumstances fall outside the above, please contact the admissions office to discuss your case.
Please note that we reserve the right to request a test of English to be taken at any time.
If you do not meet these criteria, a TOEFL or IELTS test will be required.

If you choose to take the IELTS you need to sit the Academic test. If you sit the TOEFL it must be the General test.

4. University academic transcripts, outlining the subjects studied and grades obtained.
5. Two references, professional or academic (only online recommendations can be accepted)
6. One essay, title can be found in the application form.
