This MSc is designed for those with a background in archaeology who are interested in inquiring into the range of biological evidence that can be used to understand the past. It is not a course in Human Osteology. Rather it explores the application of biological approaches (especially botany, invertebrate zoology, ecology and biomolecular studies) to archaeological problems.
This programme provides a basis for further study in bioarchaeology, zooarchaeology or field archaeology, by considering the ways in which biological remains from archaeological sites can be used to understand human activity and paleoecology and is designed so that it can be taken as a part-time course.
York probably has one of the few dense concentrations of working bioarchaeologists in the UK, and has a long history of exploiting and investigating the rich archaeological remains in York. For the period 2007-2012, the 75ha excavation at Hungate, run by York Archaeological Trust, offers a local opportunity to be involved in a large-scale, long-term excavation in the city.
Over the autumn and spring terms you will take:
* two core 20 credit modules
* two option 20 credit modules
* four 5 credit skills modules
In the summer you will carry out research for your dissertation and give an Assessed Lecture on your dissertation topic.
Core modules * The archaeology of human bone
* Ancient biomolecules
Recommended option modules * Bones: matters of life and death
* The context and practice of gathering field archaeology data
* Bones: from data to interpretation
* Analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of field archaeology data
Recommended skills modules * Human bone practical skills I
* Human bone practical skills II
* Introduction to biomolecules, invertebrates and plants
* Zooarchaeology: exploring the assemblage
* Zooarchaeology: anatomy and identification
* Topographical survey
* Artefacts
* Geophysical survey
* Geoarchaeology
Whilst we endeavour to give everyone their first choice on modules, please note that this cannot always be guaranteed. Please be aware that certain skills modules are required by particular programmes, and so may be more over-subscribed than others. Please see the Full modules list for scheduling information on option and skills modules, as some run concurrently.
