The interpretation, conservation and management of historic landscapes is one of the most exciting and fascinating areas of contemporary archaeological endeavour. To achieve a truly integrated understanding of these complex landscapes requires a variety of skills drawn from across a range of disciplines. This innovative course brings together experts in field archaeology, environmental archaeology, agrarian landscapes and parks and gardens to provide a comprehensive course that addresses the themes and issues encountered by academics, conservationists and professional archaeologists attempting to undertake the recording, interpretation and conservation of these landscapes.

Purpose

The course is designed to integrate the recording, interpretation, appreciation and conservation of historic landscapes in all their diversity. In particular, the course will provide:

* A broad foundation in the recognition, recording, interpretation and conservation of historic landscapes.
* Applied experience in data acquisition and analysis of resources through a wide range of methodologies and techniques including aerial photography, topographical survey and cartographic analysis.
* A critical review of interpretative and theoretical approaches to historic landscapes from a regional to a world-wide perspective.
* An introduction to the evaluation and the conservation of designed and vernacular landscapes.
* Involvement in a wide range of research and conservation initiatives beyond the Department through links with the Environmental Archaeology Unit, Yorkshire Country Houses Project, English Heritage and other organisations.
