The MSc in Global Health Science is a one-year, full-time course, aiming at recruiting students whom we believe will be able to assume leadership positions within major international health organisations and ministries of health.

On completion of the course, students would be expected to be equipped with the ability to deal with complexities of the subject, to be self-directed and original in tackling problems in global health and equipped to continue to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills further in research or professional practice in the field of global health.

Our course offers students the opportunity to learn from some of the world's leading figures in global health. Professor Harold Jaffe, previously Director of the National Center for HIV, STD and TB prevention at the CDC, is now Head of the Department of Public Health and chair of the MSc Organising Committee.

Other key figures include Professor Adrian Hill, internationally recognised leader in the development of vaccines; Professor David Warrell, Founding Director of our Centre for Tropical Medicine; Professor Sir David Cox, an eminent figure in biostatistics; Professor Valerie Beral, Head of the Oxford's Cancer Epidemiology Unit; Professor Alastair Gray, Head of the Oxford's Health Economics Research Centre; Professor Ray Fitzpatrick, leader in health services research and Professor Barbara Harriss-White, Director of the University of Oxford's international development programme.

Contents

The course aims to promote advanced study of the challenges of global health and their potential solutions by in-depth study of a range of scientific disciplines, so that students may understand and integrate medical, epidemiological, social and economic aspects of ill-health in developing countries.

The course will aim to develop students´:

* knowledge of the major global health problems and their potential solutions
* knowledge and skills in techniques of analysis of global health problems, particularly principles of epidemiology and statistics, health policy and public health, and international development with opportunities for training in additional specialist fields
* capacity to critically appraise evidence in global health
* skills and practical experience in researching specific health problems

This is a 1-year course, with the first two terms taught in Oxford. The third term will consist of a research attachment, which can be completed either in Oxford or in a developing country. The latter attachments will be at field sites directed by the Oxford Tropical Medicine Network or the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

All students will participate in four compulsory teaching modules: Challenges in global health, principles of epidemiology, principles of statistical methods for epidemiology, and health policy and public health.

Students will then select two optional modules from a list including: tropical medicine, vaccinology, health economics, and international development. In addition to the modules, students will complete a 1-week course in critical appraisal.

Assessment of the compulsory courses will be by means of two written papers taken at the beginning of the summer (Trinity) term. An extended essay (3,000-4,000 words) will be written and assessed for the two optional modules. In addition a dissertation (10,000 words) will be required to be submitted by the end of the Long Vacation of the same academic year.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
