This is a three term, nine month course.

The course is intended to provide an inter-disciplinary understanding of the main developments in Latin America since c1900 to the present. While the course emphasises the specific features of individual countries, there is also broad comparative coverage of major trends such as authoritarianism and democracy, the economic cycle, the effect of international factors, the evolution of the Left and Right, revolutionary movements, the effects of neo-liberal economic models. These topics are covered both in the general courses but also by visiting speakers and at the seminars and conferences organised by the LAC teaching programme.

The course consists of three components: * The general exam taken by all students provides a framework within which they can develop more specialised disciplinary work.
* In the second component of the course students choose two further papers, either from just one discipline or from across the disciplines (modern history, economics, politics and sociology).
* In the final component of the course, students write an extended essay (10,000 words). The preparation of this extended essay will allow students to develop a critical focus by examining a particular topic in depth.
