Electrical Engineering deals with the application and modeling of electronic, electromagnetic and physical phenomena in signal processing, telecommunications, control and energy transmission. Research is carried out not only on hardware, e.g. electrical circuits and systems, but also on software, e.g. models and information systems. State-of-the-art electrical components and systems are designed, analyzed and implemented, while existing systems and components are subject to all sorts of optimizations and refinements.
Electrical Engineering is a dynamic field of study, and graduates can be sure of explorative, innovative and leading roles in universities and industry.
During the first year of the Master´s degree program in Electrical Engineering, you select two `mini-programs´, in which related courses are clustered. At least one of the mini-programs focuses on technical issues. The other can be chosen freely, and may have a technical nature, but you can also choose a management program. Additionally, you have to do a six-week internship, and there is time to do some elective courses, an extra traineeship or other activities. Furthermore, you will spend time on professional development. This includes, for instance, entrepreneurship and project management.
In the second year of the Master´s program you will follow a ten-week internship. This internship can take place in the Netherlands, but it is also possible to go abroad. Furthermore, you have to take more elective courses, and, eventually, you finish your studies with a Master´s project. The results of this project are presented in a related mini-symposium.
The special Master's degree program Electrical Engineering and Information Technology lasts two years. Each year consists of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).
These credit points are subdivided as follows:
First year
- Mini-program (20%)
- Technical mini-program (20%)
- Electives (30%)
- Professional development (15%)
- Internship (15%)
Second year
- Electives (10%)
- Internship (25%)
- Final project (65%)
Internships
During the Master´s degree program in Electrical Engineering you will follow one or two short internships and one long internship. You can also choose to take the long traineeship abroad. It is also possible to earn more credits for an
internship taken in a foreign country either at universities or in companies. A lot of students go abroad, because it is a unique experience in both technological and social respects. The department of Electrical Engineering has good contacts with foreign companies and universities all over the world, from Brazil to Japan and from South Africa to Russia.
Mini programs
When starting the master´s degree program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, one of the first things to do is to select two mini programs. Mini programs are clusters of related courses and can be of two levels. First level mini programs can be started immediately. Second level mini programs are deeper and more specialized than a first level mini program and are preceded by its corresponding first level mini program. A mini program corresponds to 12 ects, which are usually three or four subjects.
For your diploma, you need two mini programs, of which at least one has to be a technical one. The non-technical mini programs can be e.g. economical or management courses. Some of them are larger than 12 ects, but part of it can be covered in the electives.
Graduation options
In the Master´s degree program in Electrical Engineering you can choose from the following five graduation options:
* Energy technology
* Micro- and physical electronics
* Measurement and control systems
* Information and communication systems
* Telecommunications
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationThe general requirements for admission to the TU/e Master's of Science programs are:
- A relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the TU/e Master's program in question.
- Sufficient mastery of the English language. To prove sufficient command of the English language you should submit an Academic IELTS or TOEFL test.
- Experience shows that students with BSc Grade Point Average (GPA) for the Bachelor's study of at least 75% are more likely to be admitted to a TU/e Master´s program.
- There may also be specific additional requirements for some Master's programs, depending on the nature of your prior education.
- Non-EEA students who are admitted to a TU/e Master's program, but who do not receive a recognised scholarship or a student grant from the Dutch government, are required to transfer a sum of 10,000 euro to the TU/e.
