This is a one-year course aimed at Latin Americans who have had some years' experience in working in government or in government-related posts. Candidates are asked to submit a specific project when applying for the course, which ought to have a relation with their previous work experience. The course is somewhat tailor-made; much of the teaching is by individual supervision. Students are also encouraged to take relevant classes in other courses.

Each candidate takes a written exam, produces a dissertation (not more than 15,000 words) and takes an oral exam.

Past students have included diplomats, lawyers, social programme workers, government economists, health sector officials, people involved in local government and political party workers. Many of them have returned to public sector work, although some have remained in academic life. Previous students have commented favourably on the cosmopolitan atmosphere at St Antony's College, and the opportunities offered at the LAC; a non-dogmatic environment and a course that offers contacts with other Latin Americans and encourages comparative study.

Recent dissertations for this course have included: Domestic Conflict, Peace Process and Foreign Policy in Colombia: Isolationism and Internationalism; The Argentine Health Care System Politics of Reform during the 1990s; Building Competitive Markets in Peru: the Case for Indecopi; and The Bargaining Process between the Executive and the Legislature in Colombia.

(a) one written examination paper from the list to be published on the Latin American Centre website soon.

(b) a dissertation of not more than 15,000 words.
