The Department of Educational Studies offers a one-year (12 month) taught full-time MA in Educational Research Methods programme . The overall goal of this MA programme is to develop fully trained and competent educational researchers (and researchers in related social sciences) able to understand and use research techniques appropriate to their subject area, and fully conversant with approaches used by other social scientists. The overall purpose of the MA is to create highly skilled researchers who are capable of either undertaking their own innovative research or contribute to research projects in any of the main methodologies of the social sciences. Some core modules are jointly taught with other social science departments. The programme offers an opportunity to work with internationally renowned experts in research methodology in educational research and related social sciences. Applications are welcomed from both home and international students.
Programme Aims
The programme has three broad aims:
(i) to review systematically, and to evaluate critically a range of philosophical paradigms of research and methodologies in social and educational enquiry;
(ii) to review systematically, and to evaluate critically, the application of these approaches in the specific areas of educational enquiry in which students are specialising; and
(iii) to support students, within an active research community, to develop research capabilities and skills which will enable them to identify and investigate their own original research questions (possibly through continuing to doctoral studies) or contribute to research projects using any of the main methodologies of the social sciences.
As well as providing a coherent and satisfying educational experience in its own right, this MA programme is primarily designed to serve as an introduction to work at PhD level, and it is expected that most applicants intend to progress to doctoral studies.
