The Department of Educational Studies offers a one-year (12 month) taught full-time MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programme.

This MA programme is designed for students who plan to teach English as a second or foreign language in the UK or internationally, or who plan to do research on the teaching, learning or assessment of English as a second or foreign language. Applications are welcomed from both home and international students.

The programme aims to:

* develop knowledge of the English language, research design, and language analysis from a discourse perspective;
* illuminate sociolinguistic contexts of English as a lingua franca and individual and societal bilingualism;
* develop an understanding of individual and social behaviour and its impact on the aesthetics and pragmatics of modern English use; and
* develop methodological approaches (new media, communicative, genre and content based) in teaching and learning a second language leading to advanced language proficiency.

Through required and elective coursework and workshops, this MA builds a foundation in topics in English pedagogy, research, and second language acquisition. This programme can also serve as an introduction to work at PhD level.
