Location of University of York

This is a taught degree with multidisciplinary methods training to equip you to design and conduct a substantial research project.

The MSc can be undertaken over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time). You will focus on the production, critical appraisal and use of scientifically rigorous research evidence, applied to a range of health-related areas.

This programme is particularly relevant to science and social science graduates and health care professionals who wish to develop their health-related research and evaluation skills, and to people from any health-related background interested in a career in health services research. A number of our students on this pathway have upgraded to MPhil / PhD study.


Contents

You will take taught modules worth 80 credits. The compulsory modules are:

* Research Methods (20 credits)
* Applied Biostatistics (10 credits)
* Epidemiology (10 credits)
* Randomised Controlled Trials (10 credits)
* Systematic Reviews (10 credits)

In addition you will choose from:

* Health Policy - Principles, Practice and the Evidence Base (10 credits)
* Biostatistics in Research Practice (10 credits)
* Qualitative Methods Applied to Health Research (10 credits)
* Health Economics (10 credits)

There may be some flexibility to attend further modules where the timetable allows.

Research project

The research project contributes 100 credits to your degree, and will be a substantial piece of in-depth research.

You will be matched with a supervisor with complementary research interests, and together you will design an appropriate project, using the skills and techniques taught in the modules.

You have substantial choice in your area of research, and for part-time students in employment, the project can represent an area that is of interest and value to your employer.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
