The overall aim of the MSc is to provide our students with the necessary training and practical experience enabling them to integrate post-genomic molecular biology with physiological function. These integrative skills are recognised as essential requirements in the pharmacological workplace, as such this course will be of particular value to those within or embarking upon a career in the pharmaceutical industry as well as those conducting research in an academic environment. The Department has a DPhil programme and students taking the MSc course will be eligible to apply.
We enroll approximately 18 graduate students each year from a strong field of applicants. The teaching is carried out by Departmental staff. In addition, specialist external tutors including industrial pharmacologists deliver additional lectures, including drug discovery. Our students attend professional development seminars and receive training in experimental design, ethical review, communication and presentation.
Specifically at the end of the course our successful students will be able to:
* o Understand pharmacological principles and their clinical application
* o Apply an integrative and multidisciplinary approach to research investigation
* o Design experimental protocols
* o Critically appraise research methods and experimental results
* o Communicate research results and clinical implications to a wide audience
CareersPharmacology is a growth industry. Pharmaceutical companies are now recruiting intensively for people with a good grounding in basic pharmacological techniques. Our course is specifically tailored to meet this deficit in employees and as such our graduates enjoy preferential recruitment options. Our top graduates are often offered sponsored doctoral training within the department. All of our graduates have found jobs at the end of our course.
Our course is taught and administered within the Department of Pharmacology and covers pharmacological principles from the molecular level through to the whole animal. We place a considerable amount of emphasis on systems pharmacology and the effects of drugs both harmful and beneficial in multiorgan systems.
Our course is intensive and has a substantial practical component. Our students also spend one term on a practical research dissertation within one of the established research groups of the Department. The projects may also involve collaboration with major pharmaceutical companies, who contribute in the region of twenty thousand pounds to the course per annum. The 5* status of the department reflects the breadth and international expertise available.
Personal TuitionEach student is allocated a personal mentor from the senior staff within the department. The mentors provide regular one-to-one feedback to the students and are available offer specific feedback on assessment and tailor academic guidance to the student. Regular, focussed tutorials are a strength within Oxford University and are seen as an opportunity to develop a broader understanding of topics raised in the lecture situation.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testOur applicants have a minimum 2:1 degree (or equivalent for non-UK students) primarily in a biological or chemical science, but applications from high calibre candidates with mathematical and physical science backgrounds would be welcomed. We understand that the cost of undertaking a graduate course can often be a problem, we do have some bursaries and we encourage all applicants to apply.
Applicants whose native language is not English must submit language test results:
* IELTS: an overall score of 7.5
* TOEFL: an overall score of 630
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Grade B.
| Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): | Grade A (Score: 80) |
