The new distance-learning course in Haematopathology is being run by the Epidemiology & Genetics Unit at the University of York, in conjunction with the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) based MSc/PGCert will start in October 2008 on a part-time basis taking up to 5 years. The course is pertinent to haematology staff working in clinical or research settings e.g. Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists, Specialist Registrars etc. who wish to specialise in Haematopathology.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide you with the relevant knowledge and skills such that you have the ability to interpret primary laboratory data to reach a diagnosis at a level expected in professional practice. Furthermore, following completion of the MSc, you will be proficient in the design of protocols to ensure accurate diagnosis of haematological malignancies and display a high level of competency in the ability to discuss diagnoses in an appropriate clinical context.

These aims will be achieved by increasing the knowledge and understanding of

* Disease pathogenesis
* Treatment protocols
* Cellular and molecular biology
* Diagnostic technologies
* Research methodologies eg study design, data analysis etc

An important feature of the course is the innovative method developed for teaching the principles of laboratory diagnosis of leukaemia and lymphoma. An unconventional approach has been adopted such that the greatest proportion of time will be allocated to the more common diseases; for example more time will be devoted to looking at B cell lymphomas compared with acute leukaemias. All training will be delivered via the University´s VLE.

Contents

The MSc involves successful completion of the six taught modules listed below, each of which is worth 20 credits. The PGCert involves taking the asterisked (*) modules.

* Introduction to haematological oncology & research methods
* *Practical approach to diagnosis - blood and bone marrow lymphoproliferative disorders
* Pathogenesis and treatment of haematological malignancies
* *Practical approach to diagnosis - tissue B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders
* Epidemiology & Statistics
* *Practical approach to diagnosis - myeloid malignancies, myeloproliferative disorders and immature lymphoproliferative disorders

In addition, for the MSc, you will have to successfully complete a dissertation which will contribute 60 credits to your degree. You will be matched with a tutor with complementary research interests. Where possible the project can represent an area of interest and value both to yourself and your employer.
