The MA in Post-war Recovery Studies provides accessible, professionally relevant, multi-disciplinary focus on issues of planning and management of reconstruction after war, humanitarian intervention in complex emergencies, and peacebuilding.

The MA is normally taken as a one-year full-time course, but can also be taken as a part-time modular option over two or three years. In addition, each of the four taught modules is open to outside professionals as a short course.

The overall aim is to train a multi-disciplinary body of professionals in the analytical, planning and management skills required to propose, design and execute recovery programmes and projects in societies torn apart by war. Professionals in the field will know that there are no stock answers to every situation, thus the course aims to give the analytical skills and tools required to assess situations and make more informed interventions. The course provides students with the theoretical framework within which to position themselves and their actions in the field. Training will include the ability to:

* Analyse and understand the nature of conflict, the impact of war and its demands upon local, national and international actors, in order to develop appropriate solutions with special attention to local cultures and systems.
* Understand the recovery process through an exploration of the dynamics of rebuilding the social, economic, psychological, political and physical frameworks of war-torn societies.
* Impart international principles and ethics of conflict resolution and peace-building in relation to reconstruction and development so that professionals have standards by which to evaluate proposed actions.
* Examine the professional's role and provide technical, organisational and managerial training in assessing needs, designing intervention programmes, working with communities, project monitoring and evaluation.
* Provide students with general skills required to manage and administer a working team/organisation, raise funds and train the trainers.

Contents

All four taught modules are compulsory and comprised of three separate weeks and involve around 14 hours contact time per week.

Teaching aims to maximize the student's opportunity to reflect on their personal motivation and operational performance. Recent experiences and case studies feed into the course which combines structured acacemic learning with practical, field-based experience. The course reflects our conviction that post-war reconstruction and development programmes should be multi-disciplinary and their positive impacts must be long term in nature. Students will participate in a programme of lectures, visits, seminars and workshops, and undertake team-work and individual research.

Our course is delivered using an interactive teaching methodology which facilitates the exchange of experience and knowledge between students and a wide range of visiting professionals and academics.

Past experience has shown that the course is a valuable opportunity for harassed professionals to take time to reflect on their work and position themselves within a broader understanding of the field.

The following tasks and pieces of work are formally assessed:

* Conflict Analysis Seminar: 3,000 word essay and oral presentation on a chosen conflict.
* Field Study Report: 5,000 words on a particular humanitarian aid, reconstruction or reconciliation project studied during the field study visit.
* Essay: 5,000 word essay, exploring a chosen post-war recovery issue.
* Project Proposal: On a post-war reconstruction issue studied during the field study visit.
* Placement Report: examined on oral presentation of student's work placement experience.
* Dissertation: The final four months of the course are set aside for students to undertake a supervised dissertation of 20,000 words on the subject of their choice. Students are expected to undertake research with a degree of originality and will be encouraged either to build on previous experiences or to explore new grounds.

Each assignment counts for 10% and the dissertation represents 50% of the total assessment.
