This ESRC and Erasmus Mundus recognised course provides training in research methods and an in-depth knowledge of public administration and public policy-making in advanced industrial societies.

It seeks to protect and develop that specialized sub-field of political science known as public administration and public policy by training a future generation of researchers and as such it provides the perfect foundation for those wishing to pursue a career in academia, policy advice, lobbying, political research or journalism.

The course aims to furnish students with: an understanding of the complex issues surrounding the formation, implementation and evaluation of public policy; a grasp of the international and domestic institutional contexts which shape the policy making process; and, specialist expertise of the theoretical, and, methodological concerns of high quality research in public policy and administration.


Contents

Participants are required to take five modules in:

* Foundations of Political Science


* Policy Analysis


* Understanding Governance


* Graduate Research Methods



plus one option from a broad menu of public policy and management modules. Finally, in the summer period all course participants will be required to complete a 20,000 word dissertation which is supported through personal supervision and a support workshop.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships

This course attracts up to 15 fully funded European Union Erasmus Mundus scholarships per year for overseas students. However, students are required to pursue this Masters degree as part of a two-year `Double-Masters' Mundus MAPP degreefully funded programme also includes a summer school and a two month long internship. Requirements

The main criterion for admission to an MA course in the Department of Politics is a 2.i BA degree or foreign equivalent in a social science-related subject.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English may need to satisfy language requirements.

The Department of Politics has a higher minimum level than the university more generally, because of the more difficult nature of the literature that Politics students must engage with. The requirements are:
