Programme Description

The MSc in Research in Psychology is run and taught jointly by the Department of Experimental Psychology at Oxford University and the Department of Psychology at Oxford Brookes University. It is recognised by the ESRC, and UK and EU students on the course are eligible for ESRC studentships.

The course provides a broadly based research training programme in psychology, covering theory and methods in basic domains of research such as cognition, neuropsychology, developmental and social psychology.

The course also provides training in personal and transferable skills such as computing skills in the context of psychological research (including qualitative methods), communication (oral and written) and teaching skills.

The MSc will consist of five taught courses and a research-based thesis of 10,000 words, and will be taught by a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops and practical experience. Assessment will be by major essays written at various stages of the course, assessed presentations, a portfolio of statistical analyses and a thesis on the student's research project.

Contents

The main aim of the Oxford MSc in Research in Psychology course is to provide these necessary skills for students who plan to go on to do a doctorate. The MSc course is also suitable for people who wish to broaden their knowledge of research in Psychology before taking a professional course such as Clinical or Educational Psychology.

The MSc course consists of six modules:

- Computer Modelling of Cognitive Processes
- Methods in Cognitive Neuropsychology
- Project Design
- Theory and Methods in Psychological Research
- Statistical Theory and Methods (SPSS Portfolio)
- Research Project

These modules will be taught by a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops and practical experience. Student's will also be accepted to produce a 10,000 word thesis on their Research Project.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Approximately 20 new graduate students from the United Kingdom and Overseas are admitted each year for the DPhil/MSc by Research course in the Department of Experimental Psychology.

Applicants are expected to have completed (or be about to complete) an Honours Degree (Bachelor's Degree) to a high standard in Psychology or related discipline that is relevant to the proposed research (e.g. Neuroscience, Physiology, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, Linguistics or Philosophy). Exceptions to these guidelines are rare, but can be made under some circumstances.

English requirements:

* IELTS: an overall score of 7.5
* TOEFL: an overall score of 630
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Grade B.
