The Department specialises in Experimental Psychology and this approach is central to the content of our taught courses. The Psychology Department at York currently comprises more than 20 academic staff members. We accept approximately 130 undergraduate students, 45 masters students and 10 postgraduate research students on an annual basis. Staff members, along with postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows, are all actively engaged in research. The Department is housed in modern, purpose-built accommodation and has excellent facilities.
We have been rated as 'outstanding' in every one of the Universities' Funding Council's research ranking exercises. Our recent 5*A research rating - this is the highest achievable research rating - confirms us as one of the country's leading research departments. The department has also received top marks (24/24) for teaching quality in the most recent Subject Review carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency.
The planned Masters programme is primarily intended for students wishing to continue with their studies in order to progress with further psychological research via the PhD route. However, the training provided will result in the acquisition of a set of analytical and practical skills that will be more generally useful for many different career paths.

Educational aims of the programme
* To lead students to an understanding of research methods, research techniques and a range of different approaches to data analyses that underpin the scientific study of psychological processes.
* To provide students with a range of specialist knowledge in particular areas of scientific psychology, research methods and data analysis. To provide the opportunity for students to undertake laboratory-based research in the context of the research groups present in the Department of Psychology.
* To help students to develop a range of scientific skills based on an understanding of the principles of psychology. These include hypothesis testing, the use of methodologies to design and conduct empirical research, information handling, data analysis and critical evaluation of empirical data.
* To provide students with opportunities to acquire transferable skills in team working, problem solving, leadership, research and effective communication (both written and spoken), so as to allow access to PhD programmes in Psychology and related disciplines and to facilitate access to a broad range of employment opportunities.
The course combines taught courses in research methods and research skills with opportunities to study a wide range of topics at MSc level. Students also undertake a substantial empirical project with a member of faculty, providing them with extensive hands-on research experience.
Modules are assessed through a variety of different assignments and exams including laboratory reports, multiple choice questions, critical analysis of published papers, short notes on a range of topics, and a dissertation and poster presentation based on the Empirical Project.
Empirical project
The empirical project enables students to participate in the design and implementation of a theoretically-motivated piece of pure or applied research in Experimental Psychology interpreted in its broadest sense. Many of the projects are published in academic journals.
Here are some examples of recent projects completed by students on this course:
* Katie Wheat used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to study phonological encoding during the early stages of visual word recognition at the York Neuroimaging Centre (YNiC). The study was published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
* Tracey Ward examined the relationship between deception detection and visual thresholds in a study entitled "Deceit in the Blink of an Eye: Can Processing Thresholds Predict Accuracy for Emotional Lie Detection?"
