The DPhil or MSc by Research in the Department of Experimental Psychology is based upon independent research carried out under supervision, culminating in a written thesis and an oral examination. The DPhil should be conceived and planned such that it is completed within three years and MSc within two years.
Research by graduate students is supervised by faculty members based in the Department of Experimental Psychology with the relevant research interests and expertise. When applying, candidates should identify a potential supervisor with the right research profile to supervise their research. Applicants whose research proposals fall outside the area of expertise of any potential supervisor in the Department are unlikely to be successful.
Contents
The first year of study includes compulsory taught courses on experimental design and statistics. Students are also expected to attend scientific seminars in the Department and to make presentations based on their own research. The University offers a large number of courses on transferable skills such as teaching and communicating scientific findings.
Successful applicants are admitted as a Probationary Research Student (PRS). If progress is satisfactory, the status is changed within the first two years to that of DPhil or MSc by Research.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

* An outline Research Proposal and the name(s) of members of staff who the applicant wishes to be supervised by. This should be no longer than two pages, summarising your background in the proposed area of research and outlining the Research Prosposal.
English requirement
The English language requirements for admission to courses at Oxford University are generally expressed as scores in either IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language). The Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) is also an acceptable qualification.
