This ESRC recognised MA addresses topics and skills of methodological concern across the social sciences. Uniquely, it allows students a certain amount of flexibility in the substantive modules they choose. In addition, students can opt to take a `specialist route´ in areas in which the department has internationally recognised expertise: criminology, crime and deviance; the sociology of contemporary culture; social informatics; the sociology of the body, health and new medical technologies.
Course Aims
* To provide students with practical experience of the range of qualitative and quantitative research methods which are necessary for doctoral research in the social sciences, and which meet the requirements of vocationally orientated social research in industry, national and local government, and public services.
* To introduce students to the underlying epistemological, methodological, political and ethical dimensions of the research process.
* To allow students to develop key debates and issues in substantive areas of sociological scholarship.
Contents
This ESRC recognised MA addresses topics and skills of methodological concern across the social sciences. It involves a number of core and option modules. Uniquely, it allows students a certain amount of flexibility in the substantive modules they choose. The course can be taken in one of two ways:
* As a general social research degree
with full flexibility in the options you select..
* With a specialist pathway in one of the following: * criminology, crime and deviance
* the sociology of contemporary culture
* social informatics
* the sociology of the body, health and new medical technologies
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Those who have, or are soon to complete, a degree in Sociology or a cognate discipline, or whose degree major contained a significant proportion of Sociology units, are eligible to apply.

English language requirement
For applicants whose native language is not English, the Department sets an English language proficiency level of 7.0 in the British Council's IELTS test or 250 in the computer-based American TOEFL test (600 in the paper-based test) with at least 6.0 in writing. We also strongly recommend that applicants attend the University's Intensive Summer Courses organised by the EFL Unit.
Students who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree at a UK University are exempt from the English Language requirement.
Their four and eight-week pre-sessional courses in August-September will help you build the study skills necessary for living within British culture and it's academic life. Typical courses comprise 21 contact hours a week in groups of 12.
Students who have already achieved 7.0 in IELTS or have demonstrated a high level of english through a piece of written work would not need to consider attending this course.
