Location of University of York

The MA degree can be taken full-time over one year, or part-time over two years. In addition to the compulsory modules Approaches to Women's Studies I and II, and the 60 credit dissertation, students taking the MA in Women's Studies will select a programme of research training modules and option modules to make up the remaining 80 credits. This programme should be agreed with the supervisor and submitted to Chair of Board of Studies. You will be allocated a supervisor for your dissertation which must be submitted towards the end of your final year.

This programme aims:

* to provide a solid grounding in interdisciplinary women's studies, emphasizing gendered aspects of social and cultural life, representation and textual enquiry
* to expose students to an interdisciplinary range of conceptual, theoretical and methodological approaches to and debates within women's studies
* to familiarize students with the epistemological and philosophical underpinnings of research methodologies, the politics and ethics of research, the principles of research design and to enable them to evaluate and apply a range of methodologies to women's studies research questions
* to foster the development of a critical, self-reflexive and independent approach to research and scholarship, as well as the acquisition of transferable skills


Contents

Programme Structure

The programme contains the following elements:

Two compulsory substantive modules of 20 credits each:

* Approaches to Women´s Studies I ( Autumn term, 1 x 2 hour seminar per week)
* Approaches to Women´s Studies II (Spring term, 1 x 2 hours seminar per week)
* Research methodology to the value of 30 credits, chosen, in consultation with the candidate´s supervisor, from the range of research training modules available in CWS, in accordance with the student´s needs.
* 2 optional modules of 20 credits each, one taken in the Autumn term and one in the Spring term. (each 1 x 2 hour seminar per week).

Options currently available include:

* Issues in Women´s Health;
* Women, Citizenship and Conflict;
* Gendering the Exotic/Exoticising Gender;
* Cultures of Life-Writing;
* Feminism and Sexuality;
* Sexualities, Genders and Modernities;
* Cyborg Perspectives: Women and Technology Today.

Dissertation workshops or Research Design & Implementation: workshops in summer term (10 credits) and supervised independent study: Dissertation; 60 credits.

Note on Part-time Structure:

Part-time students normally take compulsory and research training modules in their first year and the options and dissertations in their second year.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the MA will normally be required to have a good first degree (an upper second class degree or its equivalent), although applications from those with other qualifications may be considered on their merits. Applications are also welcomed from mature students and those returning to education.

English Language Requirements

The University's absolute minimum English language requirements are: * IELTS: 6.5 (in the 'Academic' test)*
* TOEFL: paper-based 550/ computer-based (CBT): 213/ internet-based (iBT): 79
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: A, B, C
* Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: A

*In all cases, 8-week pre-sessional English language course at York recommended in addition to language score
