The Masters Program in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics is a multi-university partnership and a truly interdisciplinary program.
The program is a collaboration between the Institutes of Mathematics, Computer Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Zurich and the Departments of Computer Science, Biology, Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and Mathematics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technolgoy Zurich (ETH).
The goal of the program is to provide students with a broad education in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics based on strong foundations in Computer Science, Biology and Mathematics. The curriculum includes practical experiences with experimental biology and computer science as cooperation and communication are key to success in this highly interdisciplinary field.
This interdisciplinary character will also be reflected in the policy of admitting applicants holding Bachelor degrees in a wide range of disciplines
Degrees are issued by the institution in which the students are enrolled although a conversion to a joint degree from both universities is envisioned.
Students with a Bachelor in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or Engineering can apply for the Masters program. (please refer to admission)
Preparation: Because this is not a consecutive master's program, all students have to fullfil certain prerequisites, according to their bachelors degree. (prerequisites)
It is possible to complete some of these prerequisites as additional courses within the Masters program. The duration of the Masters program will then normally be one or two semesters longer.
For a Masters degree in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, each student has to reach at least 90 credit points.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testThe program will be open for students with a Bachelor degree in the following disciplines: biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, computer science, electrical engineering and information technology , and mechanical / chemical / control engineering. For a meaningful Masters program in computational biology / bioinformatics, a common basis in biology, computer science and mathematics is mandatory for all students. Depending on the disciplines in which students hold a Bachelors degree, thus, additional basic knowledge in some or all of those fields will be necessary for entering MS-CBB.
