The Master of Science in Computer Science at ETH Zurich offers a profound and in-depth education in several core areas of computer science as well as in General Computer Science. Master students can select their focus from a broad spectrum that ranges from core areas like Software Engineering, Information Systems, Theorectical Computer Science to applied fields like Distributed Systems and Information Security and the interdisciplinary fields Visual Computing and Computational Science. The specialization is enriched by interfocus laboratories which emphasize the design stages of computer science solutions from modelling and algorithmics to programing, and the analysis of information processing results. Master studies in General Computer Science allow the students to select core and elective focus courses from two different focus areas.
The studies in the focus areas are structured in core focus courses and elective focus courses which can be freely selected from a rich set of course offerings. Furthermore, elective courses of other areas of computer science and free elective courses complement the focus specialization. All ETH students are requested to enroll in courses from the humanities to broaden their studies.
The ETH Computer Science Department offers several MSc programs, namely the 'Master in Computer Science' (MSc CS) and several special interdisciplinary Masters (MSc CBB and MSc RSC). The ETH Master's degree corresponds to a high level of qualification and opens doors to industrial careers. Alternatively, one can pursue a doctorate and further academic careers, or a didactic diploma in higher education (high school teaching).
Master in Computer Science (MSc CS)
For the Master in Computer Science, the students can choose one of the folllowing eight tracks: General Computer Science / Theoretical Computer Science / Software Engineering / Information Systems / Distributed Systems / Information Security / Visual Computing / Computational Science.
The Master’s program in Computer Science is structured into several course categories. The minimal number of credits which have to be acquired in a category is stated next to the category name. Several course categories are nested which support a flexible study plan. The difference between the minimal number of credits in a category and the sum of the credit requirements of subcategories can be distributed freely within the category. Credits of a course are always assigned to one subcategory and they cannot be split between subcategories.
Please see the Study Guide (2010) for a detailed description of each course category and constraints on the choice of courses. The focus courses suitable for each Master’s track are listed on the corresponding website.
