Course Content

This course comprises four core modules, personal therapy, a placement and a clinical case study dissertation requirement for the MA, which will arise from your placement.

The current modules covered by the MA are:

o The Young Person - The Counsellor: facilitating a therapeutic relationship
o The Young Person in Context: issues and influences
o The Young Person´s Environment: settings and constraints
o Empowering the Young Person: therapeutic approaches

Please note that all module details are subject to change.

You will be asked to reflect on your direct experience as a way of developing hypotheses about the nature of human development and the processes involved in personal growth and change.

You will then test these hypotheses through a dynamic mix of multi-sensory classroom activities, video work, group discussion and theoretical input from your tutor.

Visiting lecturers are a key feature of this course, giving you live opportunities to experience and critique different counselling modalities.

You will be encouraged to keep a personal learning journal throughout this course to support the personal and professional elements of the programme.

Course Structure
The MA in Counselling Children and Young People can be completed over 1 year of full-time study or part-time over 2 to 4 years.

To enable our part-time students to continue their full-time employment, teaching usually takes place during University vacations, at weekends or after school hours.

This course is assessed by the equivalent of four 5,000 to 6,000-word assignments and a 12,000 to 15,000-word dissertation, although other forms of assessment are used on some modules.

Tutorial support will encourage you to pursue areas of personal and professional relevance in your written assignments and to develop a high level of critical analysis.

We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling and Young People.
