The program integrates in-depth knowledge from core areas of mechanical engineering with product development, mathematics, computer science, physics, and chemistry. This combination qualifies graduates for careers both in traditional engineering and emerging multidisciplinary areas.

The program is tutor-driven. Each student selects one of the Department's 30 professors as a personal tutor matching the desired area of specialization. The tutor defines a personal curriculum that takes into consideration the student's talents and expectations. Areas of specialization: Aerospace Engineering, Automatic Control and System Dynamics, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Engineering, Energy Technology, Fluid Science and Engineering, General Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Economics, Manufacturing Science and Product Design, Micro and Nanoscale Engineering, Process Engineering, Robotics, Solid Mechanics and Advanced Structures.

Contents

With a sound technological basis and a wide horizon - this is how mechanical engineers work at the nerve centres where Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Chemistry come together, and where products, systems and processes are developed, calculated and planned.

Credits ECTS: 90
Language of instruction: English

Structure:

At the start of the Master course, students collaborate with a professor, their tutor, to select a subject area and then draw up an individually designed study plan. This consists of major courses that are closely linked to the selected specialist field (e.g. Susainable Energy Use, Mechatronics, Product Development, Robotics) and multidisciplinary subjects, which can be chosen from the whose range offered at ETH or the University of Zurich. The course ist completed by a twelve-week industrial placement and the Master thesis.

- Major courses (selected individually)

Requirements

The prerequisite for a Master programme is an ETH Bachelor degree in a corresponding subject, or an equivalent qualification.

Students with an ETH Bachelor degree can register directly online for the corresponding consecutive Master programme.

Students with a different qualification, and all students wishing to enter a specialised Master programme need to submit an online application. The admissions criteria for each degree programme are defined in the requirement profile. Admission depends on the applicant´s prior qualifications.

Candidates admitted to our Master programs will thus be strongly encouraged to improve their German skills during their education at the department.
