A research-based programme offering nine areas of specialization (majors): Ecology and Evolution, Neurosciences, Microbiology and Immunology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Plant Biology, Systems Biology, Structural Biology and Biophysics, Biological Chemistry.
The scope is two semesters of coursework, including two 12-week project works, and a six-month Master thesis.
The Master curriculum focuses on experimental research. Two internships of 12 weeks duration and the Master thesis of 6 months duration are carried out in one of the many research laboratories of the Department of Biology. Furthermore, specific lectures assigned to the various majors have to be chosen.
The major in the Master curriculum may be chosen independent from the lectures followed in the Bachelor curriculum. It is possible, though, to align the Bachelor curriculum with one of the majors of the Master curriculum.
The study programme of one and a half year duration emphasizes experimental approaches in two research projects and the master thesis. Depending on the previous training, 3rd year courses of the Bachelor programme may have to be taken. Otherwise, there is a choice from special master courses in each of the elective majors. Successful completion ot the master programme will allow graduates to pursue doctoral studies in highly ranking research institutions, both nationally and internationally, or to apply for demanding positions in industry or the public and services sectors.
In the Master programme, the main training priority is experimental research. Students choose one of the nine majors/specialisations and attend the appropriate specific courses.
Two 12-week experimental practicals and a six-month Master thesis conclude the programme. In view of a later career in science, the majority of graduates subsequently carry out a doctoral thesis.

To be eligible for admission to a Master programme at ETH Zurich you need to have a high-quality Bachelor degree or an equivalent first academic degree from an internationally recognised university. The degree must be in a related subject to the Master programme you wish to apply to. Your previous studies must comply in quality, depth and breadth with the requisite profile of the Master programme.
Applicants to ETH Master programmes need to provide evidence that their degree entitles them to access Master studies in the same field at their home university, if such a programme is available, or at a university in their home country. This requirement applies in particular to candidates who would have to pass additional or entrance examinations within their country´s educational system in order to progress to Master studies. The Admission Committee of the individual programmes may waive this requirement for excellent candidates and/or upon well-founded request.
If you have not yet completed your Bachelor programme you can still apply and be admitted upon the condition that you obtain your Bachelor degree before the start of the desired Master programme.
