The MSc in Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship is offered by the Department of the Built Environment in conjunction with the Nottingham University Business School. This course provides students with advanced skills in renewable energy, energy efficiency and business.

The economic wealth of a country depends not only on its research base but also on its ability to exploit the commercial potential of its intellectual property. This course provides vital training in each of the areas within the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Students will gain technical skills in this field as well as becoming fluent in the financial, marketing and managerial aspects of modern business. It aims to develop confidence and understanding in the specialist field of entrepreneurship applied to technology that can arise from the research base of sustainable energy subjects.

By the end of the course, you will have gained useful and technical knowledge in the areas of sustainable energy and business as well as the application of technologies to proposed business models, and you will be adept at communicating and presenting yourself and your projects to an audience. Graduates from the course will be well placed to pursue careers in renewable energy technology industries.

Contents

This course combines three elements: lectures in business and industrial skills (60 credits); lectures in leading edge renewable energy technology (60 credits); and the application of these technologies to a proposed business model via a 60 credit summer project.

The business element comprises of 6 modules:

The technology element comprises 3 compulsory modules:

  • Regulation and Management of Energy Supply and Use
  • Renewable Energy Technology
  • Research Methodologies

You will then be able to choose three further optional modules from topics such as:

  • Air Conditioning Technologies
  • Advanced Topics of Heat Transfer
  • Combined Heat and Power Systems
  • Combustion and Pollution Control
  • Cooling Technologies and Applications
  • Energy Conversion and Utilisation
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Hydrogen Economy and Technology
  • Materials and Building Physics

The `Renewable Energy Technology Transfer Project´ will be completed during the summer period and will provide students with the opportunity to undertake independent research into a topic appropriate to renewable energy technology transfer and apply business knowledge and skills developed through the course, working closely with companies specialising in renewable energy technologies.

Course Structure

The MSc in Sustainable Energy and Entrepreneurship is offered on a full-time basis over one year.

During the autumn and spring semesters, you will complete a total of 120 credits worth of modules taught within the Department of the Built Environment and Nottingham University Business School.

Finally, you will complete a Renewable Energy Technology Transfer Project (worth 60 credits) during the summer period at the end of the course.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
