Course Content

The course content draws upon knowledge from other disciplines and engages with a variety of cultural debates. In so doing, it attempts to introduce into the design process a range of critical techniques from outside the traditional domain of architecture, and to explore and develop innovative design methodologies.
Typical modules offered on this course currently include:
o Architectural Theory and Design
o Architectural Design and Conservation
o Explorations in the Depiction of Space
o History of 20th Century Architecture
o Philosophy of Technology
o Urban Social Issues
o Computer Modelling and Presentation
It is also possible for you to take modules in related subjects elsewhere within the University.
Please note that all module details are subject to change.
You will spend the summer semester producing a supervised dissertation - this will be an in-depth study of an individually determined topic and is your opportunity to conduct a major piece of independent research that reflects your interests and aspirations.
Course Structure
The MArch in Theory and Design is taught on a full-time basis over one year, or part-time over two years.
The course comprises 120 credits worth of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation, which you will undertake over the summer period towards the end of the course.
In each of the two semesters, you will complete a major design `package´ consisting of a studio project plus a related series of seminars. Between two and four additional lecture / seminar modules will make up your remaining credits.
This course shares common modules with other postgraduate courses including: MArch in Design and MA in Architecture and Critical Theory.
