The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) enables you to study towards the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at the same time as being employed. You will be employed by a school that has agreed to train you as a teacher, with the support of the University of Chester as the Employment Based Initial Teacher Training (EBITT) provider.
This programme is offered at primary and secondary levels. This is a highly demanding and intensive course and the programme is individually designed to meet the needs of each successful applicant. This programme can only be undertaken in English state-funded schools.
The Graduate Teacher Programme gives priority to trainees who are mature and well qualified, who need to earn a living while training because financial and domestic commitments make it difficult to follow a conventional route. The priority for funding categories are the shortage subjects, high quality primary and secondary applicants, people who are working as teaching assistants and those who are from under-represented groups such as men in primary teaching, those from minority ethnic groups and those with disabilities. We welcome applicants from these backgrounds and have support systems in place to provide good quality training experiences.
The programme aims to prepare each trainee to enter the teaching profession as a confident and competent professional with:
* the skills of the reflective practitioner
* high expectations of all pupils and respect for their social, cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic backgrounds
* a high level of motivation and ability to take responsibility for their professional development
* enthusiasm and positive attitude to change
* a range of professional and managerial skills required in the schools of today and tomorrow
Interviews will be conducted by the University of Chester and by employing schools. We have a small number of places, and applicants with previous experience and subject knowledge will be assessed.
If you are accepted on to the programme, you will be invited to an induction day to meet other trainees and to learn more about the programme and University facilities. You will also have to complete an Initial Needs Assessment so that University tutors and mentors in school can plan an appropriate individualised training plan.
The Initial Needs Assessment will involve completing subject audits, participating in discussions related to the standards for the award of QTS, an initial observation of your teaching, and the completion of self-assessment forms. Information gained from the interview, the skills identified by your school (pre-course preparation) and a self-evaluation profile will all help to identify your individual needs. All of this information will enable your Subject/Teacher mentor, GTP mentor and University mentor to draw up a training plan that you will follow to enable you to meet the standards required for the award of QTS.
You will be working towards the standards for the award of QTS.
The primary programme is divided into three components:
* Core Subjects (English, Maths, Science, ICT)
* Foundation Subjects and RE (History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Performing Arts, PE)
* Professional Development
The secondary programme is divided into two components:
* Subject Specialism including ICT
* Professional Development
Information and Communication Technology will permeate much of what you do and you will be required to demonstrate competence in using relevant technologies. Your progress will be formally audited throughout the programme.
You will spend some time teaching in those Key Stages that are not your preferred Key Stages. This is to enable you to become familiar with the expectations and requirements of each, in order to enhance your professional understanding. You will also be expected to teach in two Key Stages. This aspect of the programme will be negotiated with your employing school as part of your training plan.
A further requirement of the Graduate Teacher Programme is that you must spend time in another school as part of your training. Your previous experience will be taken into account, and the time spent in school will normally be no less than three weeks. This experience will be organised with your school and the University of Chester as the EBITT. In addition to this you would be required to spend one week working with other agencies.
The amount of time you spend teaching will be dependent upon your experience and initial needs assessment. You may begin by teaching groups, team teaching with your class teacher, or you may teach the whole class for some subjects or classes from the outset of your training. In your training, you should be teaching no more than 90% of a classroom teacher's timetable (the same as a newly-qualified teacher in their induction period). However, these percentages may vary according to individual need and you normally will begin by teaching 50 - 60%, moving to 75% and then finally to 90%. When you are not teaching, your time should be used to complete tasks and activities laid out in your training plan. This will be maintained to ensure that 60 days are spent undertaking specified training activities.
Assessment
There are several tasks that all trainees need to complete. These will be marked by your GTP mentor and University mentor and will provide evidence of your understanding of issues related to teaching. Primary trainees will complete work relating to English, Maths and Science. This involves a series of tasks and audits, which will provide us with evidence of your subject knowledge. Secondary trainees will be required to complete subject specific tasks, again to demonstrate subject knowledge. As part of your training you are required to complete an ICT folio that shows how you have used ICT in school to enhance and support learning and teaching.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testTo be eligible for the programme you must:
* normally hold a first degree (minimum of a 2:1 degree for Primary and 2:2 for Secondary)
* hold GCSEs in Maths and English Language at grade C or above (or equivalent). Applicants for primary teaching will also need GCSE Science subject at grade C or above (or equivalent).
You will need to find a school willing to employ you for the length of your training on the Graduate Teacher Programme. The school should be within a reasonable travelling distance to the University (approximately 30 mile radius) to facilitate easy access to the university support. You must be aware that there is no obligation for the school to employ you at the end of the training, or that you remain with the school once your training has finished.
