The one-year PGCE is, by necessity, an intensive and highly demanding course and prepares you to teach children of secondary age.
The course is designed at Master´s (M) level, and successful students will gain 60 credits. There are additional follow-up Masters Level modules available to students in their first year of teaching which would enable you to accumulate a further 60 credits towards a Masters degree.
The programme is intended to produce teachers who are reflective practitioners and who will be:
* enthusiastic and confident in the classroom
* pedagogically skilful and adaptable
* specialists in the teaching of their academic subject
* able to see their subject in the context of the whole curriculum
* competent in a number of areas that cross secondary school curriculum boundaries
* able to work as part of a team
Funding
A training salary of £6,000 (£9,000 for maths, science, modern foreign languages and RE trainees) is available to home and EU graduates on PGCE programmes at institutions in England, as long as they do not already have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and are not employed as teachers in schools or further/higher education institutions. The University will arrange payments, which are paid in nine monthly instalments between October and June.
Contents
The University of Chester Schools Partnership is mature and well established, and all partners work closely together to ensure coherence of training in terms of both practice and theory. There are two substantial school placements framed by relevant University sessions. Partner schools are largely, though not all, located in Cheshire, Wirral, Runcorn, Warrington, Merseyside, Shropshire, Flintshire and Denbighshire.
A distinctive feature of the course is Subject Enrichment Week, which falls in the block between the two school placements. This has been designed to consolidate and extend particular aspects of subject knowledge. For example, this has enabled Art and Drama students to visit places such as Venice, Verona, Barcelona or Amsterdam; RE students to meet with local Sikh communities and visit schools in Southall, West London; Maths students to work on problem-solving initiatives with local schools; MFL students to pursue individually directed work in their chosen countries; PE students to engage in outdoor activities at the Conway Centre, Anglesey and Science students to work at a Discovery centre on the Wirral.

Subject Specific Entry Requirements
Art
Applicants will need to have a good degree (normally a 2:1 degree, although individuals with other relevant experience may be considered) of which at least 50% is practical. In order to demonstrate their level of appropriate subject knowledge, applicants are required to bring to the interview a portfolio containing examples of their degree work and/or most recent work. It should also contain evidence of drawing. Sketchbooks and research books would be useful (excluding GCE A Level work).
Drama
A good honours degree in Drama, Theatre Studies or Performing Arts is required (normally a 2:1 degree, although individuals with other relevant experience may be considered). Candidates with other related degrees and/or who have substantial experience in the field are welcomed, but need to demonstrate that they have appropriate subject knowledge and a willingness and commitment to read widely in order to extend this. Candidates with other qualifications, e.g. drama school training, are welcomed, but would need to provide written evidence from their training school that their training qualification is equivalent to degree level.
Mathematics
The normal entry requirement is a good honours degree (normally a 2:1 degree, although individuals with other relevant experience may be considered) of which the whole, or a significant part, is in Mathematics. Some candidates whose degree is in another subject are accepted on to the course. It is possible for candidates whose degree does not contain enough Mathematics to undertake the Subject Enhancement Course at another North West centre prior to the start of the PGCE course. Modern Foreign Languages - French, German, Spanish
The normal entry requirement is a degree in one or more foreign languages (normally a 2:1 degree, although individuals with other relevant experience may be considered). The main language applicants are offering to teach must comprise at least 40% of the degree course. Consideration will be given to candidates with a degree in a relevant subject who are able to demonstrate language skills of near-native speaker competence. Applications are welcome from native speakers with a degree in a relevant subject and a good level of competence in English.
It is advisable to be able to offer a second foreign language which does not have to be at an advanced level. If you do not have a second language, you may be asked to complete a French or German extension course at a neighbouring institution prior to starting your PGCE.
Physical Education
The normal qualification would be a degree in Physical Education (normally a 2:1 degree, although individuals with other relevant experience may be considered). Occasionally candidates from other sports degree backgrounds may be considered, providing they can demonstrate physical education subject specific knowledge. All candidates should have studied modules in teaching pedagogy and practical application, or have equivalent experience of working in the six activity areas of the national curriculum (Dance, Games, Gymnastics, Swimming and Water Safety, Athletics, OAA).
Religious Education
The most common qualification is a degree (normally a 2:1 degree, although individuals with other relevant experience may be considered) of which the whole, or a significant part, is in Theology and/or Religious Studies. Candidates whose degree is in another subject are frequently accepted, provided that they are willing to undertake some supplementary study (e.g. a TDA `booster´ course in the summer). All trainees, whatever their background, will be given support during the course to extend their subject knowledge as necessary.
Science
The normal entry requirement is a good honours degree (normally a 2:1 degree, although individuals with other relevant experience may be considered) of which the whole, or a significant part, is in Science. The course prepares students to teach Science at Key Stage 3 and at Key Stage 4, and A Level in their main discipline.
All candidates must demonstrate a willingness and ability to extend their subject knowledge
